603284-001
crushed rock was installed in the annulus from the bottom of the boring to the
adjacent ground surface; the crushed gravel was installed to prevent caving
of the loose, unconsolidated sands.
• A 55-gallon steel drum was fitted with a valve near the bottom of the drum
and a measuring device was installed inside the drum. Once filled with water,
the drum and measuring system was calibrated by measuring the amount of
time it took to fill a 5-gallon bucket from the valve. The decline of water in the
drum was measured in hundredths of inch increments during the tests and
the measurements were converted to gallons.
• Each in-situ field permeability test was performed by filling the test well and
maintaining a constant elevation in the well. The water level was maintained
at this level by allowing water from the 55-gallon steel drum to drain directly
into the well from the valve. Flow of the water into the well and the water
level was maintained using a gate valve. Flow/drum volume measurements
were taken at two to five minute intervals. The field data collected and the
calculated percolation rate for each well are presented in Appendix B.
Task 4 - Laboratory Testing
Geotechnical laboratory testing was performed on selected soil samples obtained
during our field exploration. The geotechnical laboratory testing program was
designed toward a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the physical and
engineering characteristics of the onsite soils underlying the project site. The
program consisted of testing selected representative specimens, prepared from
representative samples, of the earth materials to obtain the following properties
and characteristics:
• Soil classification (ASTM D2488);
• In-situ moisture content and dry density (ASTM D2216, D2937);
• Compaction (ASTM D1557);
• Expansion Index (ASTM D4829);
• Atterberg Limits (ASTM D4318)
• Direct Shear (ASTM D3080);
• Consolidation (ASTM D2435);
4
Leighton
SL Rvcd 2019.01.21
