CAUI OIN|A 92702
June 29, 1984
Zeb's World Fanous Boathouse, Inc.
258 East Twentiet.h Street
Costa Mesa, Ca. 92627
Dear Zeb:
Subject: Seismic Safety ordinance lmplementation - 511-515 South Main Street
I am in receipt of a copy of your letter to Mr. Michael Metzler, Greater Sanla
Ana Chamber of Corunerce, dated June 1, 1984. This letEer addressed problems
you are experiencinS regarding the City's enforcement of the Seismic Safety
0rdinance at 511-515 South Main SEreet.
For the sake of simplicity I vould like lo respond point by point to the major
questions and/or statements contained within your 1elter:
"It seems Eo me that rhe City is trying to force ne to move my business to
anothqr ciEy. rr
\,
This coild not be further fron the Eruth. Rather the City is comritted to
the task of reducing life hazardous building condi li.ons--sPeci fical l y in
this case those buildings constructed of unreinforced masonry. This is
extremely important when considering the intensity of your use and the
potential for loss of life should an earthquake of moderate Eo high in-
tensity occur.
ttAre there any ot.her businesses that are goin8 to be forced out?"
The application of the Seismic SafeEy Ordinance including the time limita-
tion is equally and consistently apptied to all Class III buildings vi.thin
the City (a total of over 100 buildings). VacaEion of a buildin8 is only
one option of compliance. I mi8ht. add that at lhe present time iE appears
as though a majority of Medium Risk buildings will in fact have permits
for full seismic rehabilitation by July 29, L984.
t'Is there any rday that you know of that rre could do anythinS buE move our
operation out?"
I
2
3
Yes--lhrough immediate submittal of plans for full seismic rehabiliEaEion
and subsequent acquisiEion of building permit.s before July 29, L984. This
then would 8i.ve you 180 days vithin nhich to comnence work--2 years for
completioo of vork.
