Mater Dei High School October 20, 2023
Proposed Dance Studio, Santa Ana, California Project No. 3204.I

3204-I-01R (10/23) 7

4.3 EARTHWORK

The earthwork anticipated at the project site will consist of clearing and grubbing,
excavation of undocumented fills, excavation of disturbed soils and a portion of natural
soils, subgrade preparation, and placement and compaction of fill.

4.3.1 Clearing and Grubbing

Prior to grading, performing excavations or constructing the proposed improvements, the
areas to be developed should be stripped of vegetation and cleared of debris. Buried
obstructions, such as footings, abandoned utilities, and tree roots should be removed
from areas to be developed. Deleterious material generated during the clearing
operation, including organic topsoil, should be removed from the site. If approved by the
owner and regulatory agency, inert demolition debris, such as concrete and asphalt may
be crushed for reuse in engineered fills outside the planned building area in accordance
with the criteria presented in the "Materials for Fill" section of this report.

Although none were encountered, cesspools or septic systems encountered during
grading should be removed in their entirety. The resulting excavation should be backfilled
as recommended in the “Subgrade Preparation” and “Placement and Compaction of Fill”
sections of this report. As an alternative, cesspools can be backfilled with a clean sand-
cement slurry. At the conclusion of the clearing operations, a representative of GPI
should observe and accept the site prior to further grading.

4.3.2 Excavations

Excavations at this site will include removals of undocumented fills and a portion of natural
soils, foundation excavations, and trenching for proposed utility lines.

Prior to placement of fills or construction of the foundations, undocumented fills, disturbed
soils, and some compressible natural soils should be removed and replaced as properly
compacted fill to help provide uniform support for the building. These materials require
densification to provide adequate support of the building foundation.

For planning purposes, we recommend the removal and replacement of soils within the
building pad to extend to a minimum depth of 5 feet below existing grades or 2 feet below
the bottom of foundations, whichever is greater. The purpose of our recommendations is
to remove the undocumented fills and a portion of the natural soils directly under the
foundations and replace these soils as properly compacted fill.

If a mat foundation is utilized, the removal and replacement of soils withing the building
pad should extend a minimum depth of 3 feet or 1 foot below the mat, whichever is
deeper.

For footings of minor lightly-loaded structures outside of the building pad, such as trash
enclosures, we recommend that the removals and replacement extend to at least 2-feet
below the bottom of footings.
The actual depths of removals should be determined in the field by GPI during grading.
1202 W Edinger
Ave10/3/2024
