Wood screws have a <br />tapered shank and are threaded for <br />only 2/3 of their length. Sheet metal <br />screws typically have higher ultimate <br />load than wood screws in the smaller <br />gages, because of their uniform shank <br />diameter and full-length thread. The <br />difference is not as apparent in the <br />larger gages and lengths because the <br />taper is not as significant. <br />Values shown in Table 3 for wood <br />screws are based on 1/4-in. protrusion <br />of the wood screw from the back of <br />the panel. This was to assure measur- <br />able length of thread embedment in <br />the wood, since the tip of the tapered <br />wood screw may be smaller than the <br />pilot hole. This was not a factor for <br />sheet metal screws due to their <br />uniform shanks. <br />Adjustment for Species Other <br />Than Group 1: <br />All the ultimate loads presented in <br />Tables 1 through 4 are based on <br />plywood panels of all-Group 1 con- <br />struction. For plywood panels of other <br />species groups, the ultimate loads in <br />these tables must be adjusted by <br />Wood Screw Sheet Metal Screw <br />1" <br />©1 <br />9 <br />9 <br />5 <br /> <br />AP <br />A <br /> <br />– <br /> <br />T <br />H <br />E <br /> <br />E <br />N <br />G <br />I <br />N <br />E <br />E <br />R <br />E <br />D <br /> <br />W <br />O <br />O <br />D <br /> <br />A <br />S <br />S <br />O <br />C <br />I <br />A <br />T <br />I <br />O <br />N <br /> • <br /> <br />A <br />L <br />L <br /> <br />R <br />I <br />G <br />H <br />T <br />S <br /> <br />R <br />E <br />S <br />E <br />R <br />V <br />E <br />D <br />. <br /> <br />• <br /> <br />A <br />N <br />Y <br /> <br />C <br />O <br />P <br />Y <br />I <br />N <br />G <br />, <br /> <br />M <br />O <br />D <br />I <br />F <br />I <br />C <br />A <br />T <br />I <br />O <br />N <br />, <br /> <br />D <br />I <br />S <br />T <br />R <br />I <br />B <br />U <br />T <br />I <br />O <br />N <br /> <br />O <br />R <br /> <br />O <br />T <br />H <br />E <br />R <br /> <br />U <br />S <br />E <br /> <br />O <br />F <br /> <br />T <br />H <br />I <br />S <br /> <br />P <br />U <br />B <br />L <br />I <br />C <br />A <br />T <br />I <br />O <br />N <br /> <br />O <br />T <br />H <br />E <br />R <br /> <br />T <br />H <br />A <br />N <br /> <br />A <br />S <br /> <br />E <br />X <br />P <br />R <br />E <br />S <br />S <br />L <br />Y <br /> <br />A <br />U <br />T <br />H <br />O <br />R <br />I <br />Z <br />E <br />D <br /> <br />B <br />Y <br /> <br />A <br />P <br />A <br /> <br />I <br />S <br /> <br />P <br />R <br />O <br />H <br />I <br />B <br />I <br />T <br />E <br />D <br /> <br />B <br />Y <br /> <br />T <br />H <br />E <br /> <br />U <br />. <br />S <br />. <br /> <br />C <br />O <br />P <br />Y <br />R <br />I <br />G <br />H <br />T <br /> <br />L <br />A <br />W <br />S <br />. <br />TN,E830.0 4/13/00 10:11 AM Page 2 <br />Page 30 <br />2130 N Grand Ave <br />10/1/2024
