SCE Santa Ana
October 25,2019
Project No. 3.31634
Page 12

TABLE II

Allowable Soil
Bearing Pressure
(psf)
FS =3.0
Lateral Resistance
(psf/ft)
FS =1.5
Coefficient
of Friction
2,500 250 0.25

The allowable pressures may be increased by one-third when considering loads of
short duration such as wind or seismic forces When combining passive pressure and
frictional resistance, the passive pressure component should be reduced by one-third.
In addition, when passive resistance is calculated, the upper one foot of soil should be
neglected unless the ground surface is covered by pavement.

Footings may be constructed according to California Building Code requirements
regarding width (minimum 12-inches). Foundations shall have a minimum
embedment depth of 12-inches below outside adjacent grade. Continuous and isolated
footings should be designed in accordance with the structural engineer requirements.
Reinforcement of footings should be per the structural engineer’s design.

15.5 Foundation Construction

The following preliminary recommendations assume very low to low expansive soils
near finish pad grade.

All footing excavations should be observed by the geotechnical consultant
prior to placement of reinforcing steel, in order to verify proper embedment
into suitable soils.

If foundations and or slabs will adjoin any likewise existing surfaces, it is
recommended that the structural engineer provide details for doweling to
minimize cracking along the interface. Similarly, the architect should provide
detailing for the flooring materials (e.g. antifracture membranes) or
expansion joints to accommodate for any slight differential movement at
connections.

Site soils are suitable for use as compacted fill if they are processed in
accordance with the recommendations in Appendix C.

57 of 100
1327 S Grand Ave
12/12/2024
