<br /> SCE Santa Ana <br /> October 25,2019 <br />Project No. 3.31634 <br /> Page 15 <br /> <br /> <br />Asphalt binder to be mixed with the aggregate should conform to the provisions of Section <br />92, “Asphalts”, of the Standard Specifications and should be Performance Graded (PG) <br />Asphalt Binder. HMA shall be compacted to 91-97%. <br /> <br />Class II Aggregate Base shall all be compacted to a minimum of 95-percent of the material’s <br />maximum dry density as determined by ASTM D1557. Class II Aggregate Base should <br />conform to Section 26 of the CSS. Prepared subgrade shall be scarified and re-compacted <br />to 95-percent. The subgrade shall be smooth and uniform, and true to the required grade <br />and cross section. <br /> <br />We recommend that any curbs and gutters be designed by the project civil engineer. For any <br />proposed curbs and gutters, a minimum 4-inch section of reinforced concrete (minimum <br />2,500 psi) may be used. We suggest control joints, at appropriate intervals, as determined <br />City of Santa Ana Standards and the project civil engineer. <br /> <br />17. CORROSION POTENTIAL <br /> <br />Geochemical screening of the site soils was performed. The screening is meant to serve as <br />an indicator for determining the level of input necessary from a qualified corrosion <br />engineer. SGSI is not a corrosion consultant. Several governing agencies in Southern <br />California require the geotechnical consultant to determine the corrosion potential of soils <br />to buried concrete and metal facilities. We therefore present the results of our testing with <br />regard to corrosion for the use of the client and other consultants, as they determine <br />necessary. <br /> <br />The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) defines corrosion as <br />“deterioration of a substance or its properties because of a reaction with its environment.” <br />From a geotechnical viewpoint, the “environment” is the prevailing foundation soils and <br />the “substances” are reinforced concrete foundations or various types of metallic buried <br />elements such as piles, pipes, etc., which are in contact with or within close vicinity of the <br />soil. <br /> <br />In general, soil environments that are detrimental to concrete have high concentrations of <br />soluble sulfates and/or low pH values. Results of a laboratory corrosivity test conducted <br />on a near surface sample yielded a soluble sulfate content of 399.3 ppm, a chloride content <br />of 86.6 ppm, a pH value of 8.3, and an electrical resistivity of 4288 ohm-cm. <br /> <br />60 of 100 <br />1327 S Grand Ave <br />12/12/2024
