Scope: The structural scope for the voluntary seismic retrofit of Building C at the Southern California Edison (SCE) Santa Ana Station (1325 S Grand Ave, Santa Ana, CA 92705) is designed to be compliant with the 2022 edition of the California Building Code and the 2017 edition of ASCE 41. We design the retrofit to achieve the Basic Performance Objective for Existing buildings (BPOE) as a Risk Category IV building. This includes a structural performance objective of Immediate Occupancy (IO) at the BSE-1E seismic hazard and Life Safety (LS) at the BSE-2E hazard. We checked what would be required to achieve IO performance at the BSE-1N hazard and found that significant additional foundation strengthening would be required to resist overturning forces. The existing building is a single-story building originally constructed in 1981 with wood-framed plywood and gypsum-sheathed bearing and shear walls supporting a wood-framed roof with open-web truss joists, glulam girders, and plywood sheathing. The girders are supported by round steel interior columns, and the foundation consists of strip footings at the bearing walls and spread footings at the columns. The scope of the seismic retrofit includes adding two new plywood shear walls with associated foundations and collectors, strengthening existing gypsum-sheathed shear walls and collector splice connections, and strengthening existing roof diaphragm framing at the two re-entrant corners. This package includes the design calculations for this scope. None of the proposed building modifications increase seismic demands or reduce seismic capacity of existing elements, nor do they create or make worse and structural irregularities.
