Oct 20th, 2023

RE: Samueli Academy Bldg A / B / E / E-5D /F
plan check comments

To whom it concerns,
PanelClaw, Inc.
1600 Osgood Street, Suite 2023
North Andover, MA 01845

Tel +1 (978) 688.4900
Fax +1 (978) 688.5100
www.panelclaw.com

You have brought to our attention a few items with respect to the above referenced rooftop solar arrays. Below
are the issues as we understand them followed by our response. This does not address all items in the review
but only the ones that apply to PanelClaw. Other parties will need to address the other items.

Comments:

PC Response:
Per ASCE 7-16 Section 31.6.1 Wind Tunnel Test Requirements, Wind loads on roof-mounted solar
collectors with roof slope less than 7 degrees are permitted to be determined by wind tunnel tests as
generic loads applicable to a range of buildings, by determining load coefficients for use in the analysis
equations of the Directional Procedure in Chapters 27 and 29 for MWFRS and in Part 5 of Chapter 30
for C&C.
Testing to determine wind loads on the PanelClaw 10° or 5° south-facing roof mount solar racking
system was performed in a CPP boundary layer wind tunnel. Reports for the Wind Tunnel Test were
already attached at the end of each calculation set.
The load calculation was finished by an online layout and calculation tool called WindLab which is The
CPP PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE that uses this analytical model and allows application of the model on
any flat roof. WindLab incorporates the variation of loads across the roof as described above, and
allows them to be applied on any size roof or array.
The load calculation result with detailed DL and Mechanical Attachment to resist uplift at
module/panel level are attached to this response letter. The standard submittal calculation set shows
Array level summarized results which is aligned with these attached calculations.
Per ASCE 7-16 Section 31.6.1.2 Peer Review Requirements for Wind Tunnel Studies of Roof-Mounted
Solar Collectors. The peer reviewer shall submit a written report to the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
These reports were peer reviewed by Gregory A. Kopp, PhD, PEng. who is currently Chair of the ASCE
49 Standards Committee Wind Tunnel Testing for Buildings and other Structures. See the attached
peer review report.

Comments:

PCC2.2.1
1901 N Fairview St & Bldg A, B,
C, F & 1919 N Fairview St Bldg E
4/11/2024
