MEZZANINE INFORMATION

A mezzanine is an intermediate level between the floor and roof of the metal building system
and is designed as an accessory to the building when the mezzanine area is less than one third
of the supporting force resisting system. If the mezzanine area exceeds this area-based
threshold the mezzanine is considered a separate floor for seismic design purposes.
Mezzanine loading, diaphragm design, beam design, and associated connection design is
contained in this section. Building bracing members that are part of the mezzanine load path
are designed for forces associated with building base shear forces. Mezzanine chords,
collectors, beam connections, and bracing connections are designed for the forces associated
with collector forces when higher than base shear forces. Mezzanine diaphragms and
connections to support members other than chords and collectors are designed for inertial
forces, inherent torsion, and accidental torsion with amplification when required. Mezzanine
diaphragm connections to chords and collectors are designed for the forces associated with
collector forces when higher than diaphragm forces.
When open web steel joists are used the required loading and design code criteria is supplied
to a joist manufacturer to produce the mezzanine joists. When concrete is used as the wearing
surface or part of the structural diaphragm the concrete mix design, temperature and shrinkage
reinforcement, supplemental reinforcement, and in slab conduit placement is by the Engineer
of Record. When diaphragm irregularities are present such as reentrant corners, diaphragm
openings, or other inertial irregularity forces contained in the slab the Engineer of Record is
responsible for specifying any additional slab reinforcement as required. When temporary
shoring is required for slab placement the Engineer of Record shall determine the required
shoring framing system.

45 1901 N Fairview St & Bldg A, B,
C, F & 1919 N Fairview St Bldg E
4/11/2024
