2717 Huckleberry Rd, Unit #2 Santa Ana, CA 92706

In general, temporary excavations should be performed in accordance with OSHA requirements. Care should be
taken during excavation near an existing (on-site or offsite) structural object, if any, to ensure no damage is
done to the existing object.
In general, temporary cut near an existing (on-site or off-site) structural object, if any, should not be performed
below a 1:1 imaginary plane projected from the outside bottom edge of the footing of the existing object unless
proper shoring is provided.

In general, a near vertical cut can be performed for temporary cuts 5 ft. or less in height. For the temporary cuts
higher than 5 ft., the portion above 5 ft. should be flattened to 1H:1V, otherwise shoring should be provided.

For this project, temporary excavation is not anticipated to impact the existing footings. However, this will be
verified by the geotechnical engineer based on the soil conditions to be exposed during the excavation. It is also
not anticipated, however, if needed construction in sections, about 10 -15 ft. long can be performed. Again, this
will be determined based on the conditions of the soils to be exposed during excavation.

The above temporary-cut recommendations can be changed by the geotechnical consultant based on conditions
exposed in the field during excavations.

BUILDING FOUNDATION DESIGN GUIDELINES

Geotechnical Parameters For Structural Design

For conservative purposes, the following “lowest” code values should be used for structural design, as needed.

a. Allowable vertical bearing earth pressure: 1,500 psf.
An increase of one-third is permitted when using the alternative load combinations that include wind or
earthquake loads.
b. Lateral bearing passive earth pressure: 100 psf. per foot into competent materials below the finished
ground surface.

An increase of one third is permitted when using the alternative load combinations that include wind
or earthquake loads.

c. Lateral Sliding Resistance: cohesion = 130 psf.

The cohesion value is to be multiplied by the contact area.

In no case shall the lateral sliding resistance exceed one-half the dead load.

d. Soil unit weight: 120 pcf.
