Where ceiling is not supporting interior partitions,
ceiling bracing shall be provided by four no. 12 gauge wires secured to the main runner within 2" of the
cross runner intersection and splayed 90 degrees from each other at an angle not exceeding 45 degrees
from the plane of the ceiling. A strut (adequate to resist the vertical component from lateral loads)
fastened to the main runner shall be extended to and fastened to the structural members of the roof or
floor above. These horizontal restraint points shall be placed 12' o.c. in both directions with the first point
within 6' of each wall.
Lateral force bracing is not required if a ceiling area of 144 sq.ft. or less is surrounded by walls which
connect directly to the structure above.
LIGHTING FIXTURES
Lighting fixtures shall be supported by no. 12 gauge hangers attached to the grid members within 3" of
each corner of each fixture.
All light fixtures shall be attached (with approved screws or clips) to the suspended ceiling grid systems at
two opposing sides.
Fixtures between 11 to 55 lbs: Two #12 gage hanger wires connected from the fixture housing to the
structure above. These wires may be slack.
MECHANICAL SYSTEM SUPPORTS
Ceiling mounted air terminals or services weighing less than 20 pounds shall be positively attached to the
ceiling suspension main runners or to cross runners with the same carrying capacity as the main runners.
Terminals or services weighing 20 pounds but not more than 56 pounds, in addition to the above, shall
have two #12 gage wire hangers connected from the terminal or service to the ceiling system hangers or
to the structure above. These wires may be slack.
Terminal or services weighing more than 56 pounds shall be supported directly from the structure above
by approved hangers.
Based on the maximum spacing of 12' on-center in each direction, the
following strut sizes and corresponding maximum lengths may be used:
Max. Length
1/2” diameter conduit (EMT) 5'-10”
3/4” diameter conduit (EMT) 7'-8”
1” diameter conduit (EMT) 9'-9”
Single 162S125-33 metal stud 12'-0”
(1-5/8” x 20 gauge)
Back to Back 162S125-33 metal studs 15'-0”
(1-5/8” x 20 gauge)
Single 250S125-33 metal stud 13'-6”
(2-1/2" x 20 gauge)
Back to Back 250S125-33 metal studs 15'-0"
(2-1/2” x 20 gauge)
Where utilizing a strut that is not indicated on the table above, the strut
shall be capable of resisting the vertical component of 180 pounds
induced by the wires.
T-BAR MAIN OR
CROSS RUNNER
(HEAVY DUTY)
8" MAX
12 GA.
WIRE
WALL
FRAMING
2"
MIN.
ASCE7-10 Section 13.5.6.2.2 Acoustical tile or lay-in panel ceilings
shall comply with the following:
1. In each orthogonal horizontal
direction, one end of the ceiling grid shall be attached to the
closure angle or channel. The other end in each horizontal
direction shall have a 0.75 inch clearance from the wall and
rest upon and be free to slide on the closure angle or channel.
3/4"
MIN.
