3rd & Broadway, Santa Ana, CA
Volume 2 - Structural Calculations June 17, 2024 | Project # S21043.00
pg. 59
4.6.1 RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
Base Shear for Residential building Story Drift Check
The story drifts are checked for the unscaled modal base shear, Vt, per Section 12.9.1.4 of ASCE 7-16.
So the building drifts are checked using a response spectrum base shear of Vt scaled to gravity and
divided by R.
Story Drift Ratios for Residential building
The response spectrum base shear are applied to the structure through response spectrum cases for
earthquake along X and Y directions. Since building has Torsion Irregularity of Type 1a, the center of
mass displacements cannot be used for calculation of Story drifts per section 12.8.6. Instead, drifts must
be calculated at the location of maximum drift at any point on the floor plate. The following node was
selected for calculating story drifts as this points sees the greatest inter-story drift.
The story drift ratios are calculated for the node at each story. The elastic drift values are then magnified
by Cd / Ie = 5.0 as specified in ASCE 7-16 section 12.9.1.2 to reach the anticipated inelastic drift values.
The following figures present the inelastic story drift ratios, which satisfy the code limits.

Figure 4.6-1: Nodes for calculating inter-story drift ratio
