3rd & Broadway, Santa Ana, CA
Volume 2 - Structural Calculations June 17, 2024 | Project # S21043.00
pg. 83
5.1 INTRODUCTION
In the following section, the mat foundation, and perimeter basement wall de sign will be presented. The
superstructure of the proposed hotel was modeled using ETABS, as described previously in this report.
Gravity loads from this model were imported into a SAFE model via an â.f2Kâ file as point loads distributed
along walls and at column locations. Foundation overturning moments at lateral force resisting elements
were implemented into the SAFE model manually to properly assign sign conventions to the sta tic and
spectral forces. In addition to the superstructure loads, area loads are implemented in the SAFE model to
account for the superimposed dead load and live load at the foundation level. The mat foundation is
supported by a vertical soil subgrade modulus provided by the geotechnical engineer.
The SAFE model is used to perform checks for 1-way and 2-way shear at the shear walls, core walls, and
gravity column locations. Additionally, SAFE is used to perform flexural design of the mat foundations.
The perimeter basement walls are designed using the concrete design program S -Concrete. Lateral loads
imposed on the perimeter basement walls are from hydrostatic fluid pressure as well as lateral earth
pressures provided by the geotechnical engineer. Th e maximum height of the water table is assumed to
be located 40â-0â below the ground surface, as recommended by the geotechnical engineer.
