3rd & Broadway, Santa Ana, CA
Volume 2 - Structural Calculations June 17, 2024 | Project # S21043.00
pg. 92
5.3.3 MAT FOUNDATION DESIGN
The mat foundation design was performed using SAFE. The models were run using non -linear soil
springs in appropriate load combinations to take into account the inability of the soil to resist tension
forces. Perimeter foundation walls were included in the SAFE model, helping to ‘anchor’ the two
perimeter shear walls of the Hotel tower against base overturning.
The thickness of the mat was governed by the shear demand of the gravity columns and the lateral force
resisting elements. SAFE models were used to determine mat shear demand adjacent to columns,
shear walls and core walls. SAFE was also used to determine the flexural demand and required mat top
and bottom reinforcing at all locations.
Elevator pits within and adjacent to cores were modeled as 2 ft thick slabs, also checked for local shear
and moment demands. SAFE models with different widths of design strips were used to determine force
concentration and redirection occurring around the pits.
