<br />1.2 REFERENCES, CODES AND STANDARDS: The following references, codes and standards are hereby
<br />made a part of this Section shall conform to the applicable requirements therein except as
<br />otherwise specified herein or shown on the Drawings. The latest adopted edition of references
<br />and codes adopted by the Governing Agency shall apply. Nothing contained herein shall be
<br />construed as permitting work that is contrary to code requirements.

<br />1.3 SUBMITTALS:
<br />
<br />A. Shop Drawings: Submit including complete layouts, sections, and details for congested
<br />conditions, typical bending diagrams and offsets, splice lengths and locations, proposed
<br />layout where vertical and horizontal bars intersect, and wherever welding is proposed,
<br />detailed to conform to AWS and CBC requirements. After approval of initial submission,
<br />subsequent submittals may be waived.
<br />
<br />B. Product Data: Provide product data for all mechanical couplers, spacers, chairs, sleeves,
<br />and other items related to the reinforcing detailing.
<br />
<br />C. Certifications: If steel is to be welded, submit certifications signed by AWS Certified
<br />Welding Inspector (CWI) of prequalified welding procedures, qualifications of welding
<br />procedures unless prequalified, qualification of welding operators, and qualification of
<br />welders.
<br />
<br />D. Chemical Analysis: Provide for bars to be welded, in accordance with CBC Table 1705.3
<br />and ACI 318 26.6.1.2.
<br />
<br />1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE:
<br /> A. Source Quality Control: Refer to Section 01 40 00 for general requirements. Compliance
<br />requirements of ACI 318 Section 26.6.1.2 shall be met.
<br />
<br />B. Qualification of Welds, Welding Operators, and Welders: Comply with applicable Building
<br />Code standard. Perform welding procedure qualification, except for prequalified
<br />procedures, as required by AWS D1.4, prior to executing any welding of reinforcing steel.
<br />
<br />1. Only AWS Certified Welding Inspectors shall be used for tests and qualifications
<br />associated with welding of reinforcing steel.
<br />
<br />2. Only AWS qualified welders or welding operators shall perform welding of
<br />reinforcing steel.
<br />
<br />C. Welding of reinforcing shall be in conformance with AWS & CBC. Do not weld reinforcing
<br />without approval of the structural engineer.
<br />
<br />D. Install reinforcing in accordance with ACI 318, ACI 117, CRSI & CBC.
<br />
<br />E. Coordination: Coordinate Work specified in this Section with other Sections which
<br />require placement of embedded products and provision of openings and recesses. If
<br />formwork is placed after reinforcement, resulting in insufficient concrete cover over
<br />reinforcement, request instructions from Architect and Structural Engineer. Coordinate
<br />reinforcing adjustments are required to accommodate embedded items with Structural
<br />Engineer before proceeding.

<br />1.5 MARKING AND SHIPPING:
<br />
<br />A. Bundle bars, tag with identification, and transport and store so as not to damage any
<br />material. Use metal tags indicating size, length and other marking shown on placement
<br />drawings. Maintain tags after bundles are broken.
<br />
<br />1.6 EXTRA MATERIAL:
<br />
<br />A. Provide and install an additional 2% of the total rebar quantity for the project in addition
<br />to the quantities shown on drawings. This additional steel shall be installed during
<br />construction, in sizes and locations as directed. Provide unit price for the purpose of
<br />adjusting contract price to reflect quantity of extra material actually used. All unused
<br />material shall be credited to the owner based upon the agreed unit prices.
<br />
<br />PART 2 - PRODUCTS
<br />
<br />2.1 MATERIALS:
<br />
<br />A. Reinforcing bars: ASTM A615, Grade 60, unless otherwise indicated on drawings.
<br />Strength performance requirements for use as noted in the drawings.
<br />
<br />B. Reinforcing bars for welding: ASTM A706, Grade 60.
<br />
<br />C. Welded steel wire fabric conforming to ASTM A1064 as indicated on the structural
<br />drawings.
<br />
<br />D. Shear studs: Low carbon steel, C1015 in accordance with ASTM A108.
<br />
<br />E. Stud welding method in accordance with AWS D1.1.
<br />
<br />F. Tie wire: ASTM A1064, Annealed copper-bearing steel, 16 gauge minimum.
<br />
<br />G. Chairs and similar support items:
<br />
<br />1. Chairs, Bolsters, Bar Supports and Spacers: Wire-bar-type devices, complying
<br />with CRSI Manual of Standard Practice, for spacing, supporting and fastening
<br />reinforcing bars and welded wire fabric in place. Provide size and shape as
<br />required for strength and support of reinforcement during reinforcement
<br />installation and concrete placement.
<br />
<br />a. Supports at Slab on Grade: Provide devices with load-bearing pads or
<br />horizontal runners where base material will not support chair legs, to
<br />prevent puncture of vapor retarder or provide precast concrete block bar
<br />supports of equal or greater strength to specified concrete.
<br />b. Corrosion Resistance:
<br />i. Provide plastic coated, plastic-tipped (CRSI, Class 1) or stainless steel
<br />types at exposed-to-view concrete surfaces.

<br />ii. Provide only stainless steel (CRSI Class 2) at exterior exposed surfaces
<br />to be painted.
<br />
<br />H. Welding electrodes: AWS D1.4, Table 5.1 for low hydrogen electrodes, E9018 for Grade
<br />60 steel.
<br />
<br />I. Mechanical Couplers or Splice Devices: Lenton, Barlock, Cadweld conforming to ACI 318.
<br />
<br />2.2 FABRICATION OF REINFORCING BARS:
<br />
<br />A. Comply with CRSI Manual of Standard Practice for Reinforced Concrete Construction for
<br />fabrication of reinforcing steel.
<br />
<br />B. Bending and Forming: Fabricate bars of the indicated sizes and bend and form to required
<br />shapes and lengths by methods not injurious to materials. Do not heat reinforcement for
<br />bending. Bend bars No. 6 size and larger in the shop only. Bars with unscheduled kinks
<br />or bends are subject to rejection. Use only tested and approved bar materials.
<br />
<br />C. Welding: Use only ASTM 706 steel where welding is proposed. Perform welding, where
<br />shown or approved, by the direct electric arc process in accordance with AWS D1.4 using
<br />specified low-hydrogen electrodes. Preheat 6" each side of joint. Protect joints from
<br />drafts during the cooling process; accelerated cooling is prohibited. Do not tack weld
<br />bars. Clean metal surfaces to be welded of all loose scale and foreign material. Clean
<br />welds each time electrode is changed and chip burned edges before placing welds. When
<br />wire brushed, the completed welds must exhibit uniform section, smooth welded metal,
<br />feather edges without undercuts or overlays, freedom from porosity and clinkers, and
<br />good fusion and penetration into the base metal. Cut out welds or parts of welds found
<br />defective with chisel and replace with proper welding. Prequalification of welds shall be
<br />in accordance with the Code. No welds shall be made at bends in reinforcing bars.
<br />Prequalification of welds shall be in accordance with AWS D1.4.
<br />
<br />D. Galvanizing: Hot dip galvanize fully completed reinforcing assemblies in accordance with
<br />ASTM A123 where indicated.
<br />
<br />
<br />PART 3 - EXECUTION
<br />
<br />3.1 INSTALLATION OF REINFORCING:
<br />
<br />A. Provide additional reinforcing bars at wall and slab openings as required. Before placing
<br />bars, and again before concrete is placed, clean bars of loose mill scale, oil, or any other
<br />coating that might destroy or reduce bond.
<br />
<br />B. Securing in Place: Accurately place bars and wire tie in precise position where bars cross.
<br />Bend ends of wire ties away from the forms. Wire tie bars to corners of ties and stirrups.
<br />Support bars according to CRSI 63 using approved accessories and chairs. Place precast
<br />concrete cubes with embedded wire ties to support reinforcing steel bars in concrete
<br />placed on grade and in footings. Use care not to damage vapor barriers where they occur.

<br />
<br />C. Coordination: Locate reinforcement to accommodate embedded products and formed
<br />openings and recesses. All embedded items shall be secured to the reinforcing to prevent
<br />movement of displacement.
<br />
<br />D. Clearances: Maintain minimum clear distances between reinforcing bars and face of
<br />concrete as indicated on plans or directed.
<br />
<br />E. Splices: Do not splice reinforcing bars at the points of maximum stress except where
<br />indicated. Lap splices as shown or required to develop the full strength or stress of bars.
<br />Stagger splices in horizontal wall bars at least 24" longitudinally in alternate bars and
<br />opposite faces.
<br />
<br />F. Splice Devices: Install in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions.
<br />
<br />G. Wire Fabric Placement: Place fabric in sheets as long as practical, lapping adjoining pieces
<br />at least one full mesh plus 2”, 9”, or 1.5 ld, whichever is greater and tie with 16 gage wire.
<br />Offset end laps in adjacent widths to prevent continuous laps. Extend fabric to within 1-
<br />inch of edge at slabs on grade. Cut mesh at expansion joints and full depth control joints.
<br />
<br />H. Field Welding of Bars: As specified for fabrication.
<br />
<br />I. Maintaining Bars In Position: Take adequate precautions to assure that reinforcing
<br />position and spacing is maintained during placement of concrete.
<br />
<br />3.2 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL:
<br />
<br />A. Supervision: Perform work to this section under the supervision of a capable
<br />superintendent.
<br />
<br />B. Inspection: Obtain inspection and approval of reinforcing before concrete is placed.
<br />
<br />C. Welding Inspection. Whether welding is done in the shop or at the site, perform welding
<br />of reinforcing bars under inspection of the Testing Laboratory Welding Inspector. All
<br />reinforcing welding shall have continuous inspection.
<br />
<br />D. Notify structural engineer approximately 3 days prior to completion of placement.
<br />
<br />3.3 CORRECTIONS DURING CONCRETE PLACEMENT:
<br />
<br />A. Corrections During Concrete Placement: Maintain reinforcing steel workers during
<br />placement of concrete for resetting reinforcement displaced by runways, workers and
<br />other causes.

<br />3.4 DEFECTIVE WORK:
<br />
<br />A. Defective Reinforcement Work: The following shall be considered defective and may be
<br />ordered to be removed and reconstructed at no change in Contract Time or Sum.
<br />
<br />1. Bars with kinks or bends not shown on Drawings.
<br />2. Bars injured due to bending or straightening.
<br />3. Bars heated or bent.
<br />4. Reinforcement not placed in accordance with Drawings and Specifications.
<br />5. Rusty or oily bars.
<br />6. Bars exposed in surface of concrete.
