Backfill material was native silty sand with a
trace of clay which was placed in a 3.5 foot Iift.
compaction was obtained by rneans of a hydraulic harnrner and
moisture was supplied by a water hose.
The subgrade for paving consisted of imported sandy silt
placed in 6 to 10 inch lifts. The lifts qrere compacted by
means of a loaded D860A scraper and a 545A loader. The
required moisture lras supplied by a 1500 gallon water truck.
The density of the soil was determined in accordance
with A.S.T.M. Test Method D-2937. The results qtere compared
to the maxirnum dens j,ty as determined in accordance with
A.S.T.M. Test Method D-L557 for the subgrade.
