California Residential Code (CRC) Section R314.1and R115.2 states in pa.t that existing dwelling5 be
"retrofltted with smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. CRC Section R314.3 and R315.3 define
the requ ired locations

bedrooms and also on each level of the dwelling. Alarms are recommended in bedrooms witn g3i-iired
appliances (i.e. hot w3ler heater, cooktop, furnace)or a fireplace.
6Srnok. alarms: Are initrlled ;n e.:ch room used for sleeping, in each hall,,rray outside ot a sleeprng
room, and on each level of the d,relling.
Relrofitted detectors may be ba tte ry-operated for buildings where no interior alterations are
performed. Combination Smoke/CO alarms must comply with all applicable standards and be appro'red
by the State Fire Marshall (SFM). Battery life must be 10 years.
