EXPEDITED PERMIT PROCESS FOR SMALL_SCALE PV SYSTEMS
STANDARD STRING SYSTEM
The information in this guideline is inrended to help local jurisdictions and contractors identify when PV system installations
are simple. needing only a basic review and when an installation is more complex. lt is likely that 50%-75% of all residenrial
systems will comply with these simple criteria. For projec$ that fail to meet the simple criteria, resolution steps have been
suglgested to provide as a path to permit approval.
Required Inforrn4tion for Pennit:
l. Site plan showing location of major components on the property. This drawing need not be exacdy to scale, but it
should represent relative location of components at sile (see supplied example site plan). PV arrays on dwellings
with a 3'perimeter space at ridge and sides may not need separate fire service review.
2. Electrical diagram showing PV array conf, guration. wiring system, overcurrent protection, invertet disconnects.
required signs, and ac connecrion ro building (see supplied srandard elecrrical diagram).
3. Specification sheets and installation manuals (if available) for all manufactured components including, but not
Iimited to, PV modules. inverter(s), combiner box, disconnecrs. and mounting system.
Step 1 : Skuctural Review of PV Array Mounting System
Is the aray to be mounted on a &hned, p€rmitt€d roof structurc? Eyes Elt'to
IJ No due to non-compliant roo.f or a ground mount . submit completed worksheet .for the structure WKS I .
RooJ InJormation:
l. ls the roohng type lightweight (Yes = composition, lightweight masonry. metal. etc. )
f No, submit completed. worksheet Jor rooJ structure Wr(S, (No = heavy masonry, slate, etc. . .)
2 Does the roof have a single roof coveringZ Eves ! no
I,f No, submit completed worksheet lor roof sffucture WKSI .
3. Provide melhod and rype of weatherproofing roof penetrations (eg flashing. caulk)Flashing, geocell sealant
M ounting Sy st em Information :
l. ls the mounting structure an engrneered product designed to mount PV modules with no more than an 18" gap
benearh rhe module frames? E yes I tto
IJ No, proyide details oJ structural attachment certiled by a design prolessional.
2. For manufactured mounting systems, hll out information on the mounting system below:
a. Mounting System Manufactu rer zeg product Name and Modelf Comp Mount Type C
b. Total Weigh t of PV Modules 6n6 n2115 663 bs
c Total Number of Atrachment Po,nts 16
d. Weight per Auachment Point (b. c)j]:l-lbs (if greater than 45 lbs.seeWKSl)
e Maximum Spacing Between Atrachment Points on a Rail 48 inches (see producr manual for
maximum spacing allowed based on maximum design wind speed)
Total Surface Area of PV Modules (square [eet)221 ft'f
a Distributed Weight of PV Module on Roof (b + f)3.0 lbs/ftr
I distributed wevht oJ the Pv system is greater than 5 lbstf , see WKSI .
Step 2: Electrical Review of PV System (Calculations lor Electrical Diagram)
In order for a PV system to be considered for an expedited permit prccess, the following mnst apply:
l. Pv modules. utility-interactive inverters, and combiner boxes are identihed for use in PV systems.
2. The PV array as composed of 4 series strings or less per inverter.
5. The total inverter capacity has a continuous ac power output 13,440 Watls or less
4. The ac interconnection point is on the load side of service disconnecting means (690.64(8)).
5. One of the s(andard electrical diagrams (E I . 1 , E | . I a, E l I b, or E l I c) can be used to accurately represent the PV
system. Interactive PDF diagrams are available at www.solarabcs.org/permining.
FilI out the stand.ard. electrical diagram completely. A guide to the electrical diagram is provided to help the applicant
understand each blank to fll in. f the electrical system is more complex than the standard electrical diagram can eflectiveu
communicate, provide an alternative diagram with appropriste detqil.
