EXPEDITED PTRMIT PROCESS FOR SMALL-SCALE PV SYSTEMS
STANDARD STRING SYSTEM
The information in this guideline is intended to help local jurisdictions and contractors identify when PV system installations
are simple. needing only a basic review and when an installation is more complex. lt is likely that 5O%-75% of all residential
systems will comply with these simple criteria. For projects rhat fail to meet the simple criteria. resolution steps have been
suggested to provide as a parh to permit approval.
Required lt{ormation for Permit:
1. Site plan showing location of major components on the property. This drawing need not be exactly to scale. but it
should represent relative loca(ion of componenls at site (see supplied example site plan). PV arrays on dwellings
with a f perimeter space at ridge and sides may not need separate frre service review.
2. Electrical diagram showing PV array connguration, wiring system, overcurrent protection, invertet disconnects.
required signs. and ac connection to building (see supplied standard electrical diagram).
3. Specihcation sheets and installation manuals (iI available) for all manufactured components including, but not
limited to. PV modules. inverter(s), combiner box, disconnects, and mounring system.
Step 1 : Structural Review of PV Array Mounting System
ls the array to be mounted on a defrned, permitted roof structure?Yes E no
I No due to non-compliant rot{ or a grourul mount, submit completed worksheet lor the structure WKSI
Roof InJoftnotion:
l ls the roohng type lightweight (Yes = composition. lightweight masonry, meEl. etc...)YES
ry No. submit completed worksheet for roof sffucture WI(SI (No = heavy masonry, slate. etc. . .)
2. Does the roof have a single roof coveringZ ElVes Ino
If No, submit completed worksheet ror roof sffucture wKSl .
3 Prov,de method and rype of wearherproohng roof penetrations (e.g. flashing. caulk)Flashing, geocell sealant
M ount ing Sy st en I nIorfi at i on :
I Is the mountinq structure an engrneered producl desrqned to r'nount PV modules wrth no more than an I8" gap
benearh lhe mJdule frames? EIv". E r.io
If No, provide detaik of sffuctural attachment certifed by a design proJessional.
2 For manufactured mounting systems. nll out information on the mounting system below
a. Mounting Sy srem Manufacturer ZeP roducr Name and 11466g1X Comp V4 w Flashing-lnsert
b Total Werg ht of PV Modules 3n6 P1115 741 lbs
c Total Number of Attachment Point 21
d weighr per Attachment Point (b .- c) 35.29 lbs (ii greater than 45 lbs. see wKS I )
e Maximum Spacing Between Attachment Points on a Rail 48 inches (see product manual For
maximum spacing allowed based on maximum design wind speed)
f. Total Surface Area of PV Modules (square feet)257
g. Distributed Weight of PV Module on Roof (b -i' l)3.0 lbs/ftl
Il distributed weight oJ the PV system ts greater than 5 lbstf , see WKSI.
Step 2: Electrical Review o[ PV System (Calculations lor Eleckical Diagram)
ln order for a PV system to be considered for an expedited permit pmcess, the following must apply:
I PV modules. utility-interactive inverters. and combiner boxes are identihed for use in PV systems.
2. The Pv array is composed of 4 series strings or less per inverter.
3. The total invefler capacity has a conrinuous ac power ourput 13.440 Watts or less
4. The ac interconnect,on point is on the load side of service disconnecting means (690.64(8)).
5. One of the standard electrical diagrams (El.l, El.la. El.lb, or El.lc) can be used ro accurately represent the PV
system. lnreractive PDF diagrams are available at www.solarabcs.org/permitting.
Fill out the standard electrical diagram completely. A guide to the electrical diagram is provided to help the applicanf
understand each blank to jU in. If the electrical system is more complex than the standard electrical diagram can elJectively
communicdte. provide an alternative diagram with appropriate detail.
