ExpToITTo PERMIT PROCESS FoR SMALL.SCALE PV SYSTEMS
STANDARD STRING SYSTEM
The informarion in this guideline is inrended lo help Iocal jurisdicl ions and contractors idenlify when PV sysrem installations
are simple. needing only a basic review and when an installation is more complex. Ir is likely thar 50%-75% of all residential
systems will comply with these simple crrteria. For projects that fail to meet the simple criteria. resolution steps have been
suggested to provide as a path to permit approval.
Required lr{ormation for Permit:
I Site plan showing location of maJor components on the property. Thls drawlng need nor be exactly lo scale, bur lr
should represent relative location of components at site (see supplied example site plan) PV arrays on dwellings
with a f' perimeter space at ridge and sides may not need separate Rre service review.
2. Electrical diagram showing PV array configuration, wiring system, overcurrenr prorecrion, inverte( disconnects,
required signs, and ac connecrion to building (see supplied standard electrical diagram)
3. Specihcation sheets and installation manuals (if available) for all manufactured componenrs including, bur nor
Iimited to, PV modules, inverter(s), combiner box. disconnecls, and mounting system
Step 1 : Structural Review o[ PV Array Mounting System
ls the array to be mounted on a defined, permitted roof structure?ves E I,,to
II No due to non-compliant rooJ or a growtd mount. submlt completed worksheet Jor the structure wKS I
Roof lr{ormation:
I ls rhe roohng type lightweight (Yes : composition. lightweighr masonry, meral, etc )YES
U No, submit completed worksheet.lor rooJ structure WXS, (No = heavy masonry, slate, etc...)
2 Does the roof have a single rool coveringz Eyes E r,lo
If No, submit completed worksheet for roof structure WKSI .
3 Provide method and lype of wealherproonng rooI penetratrons (e g flashing. caulk)Flashing, geocell sealant

Dislributed Weigh( ol PV N4oduie on Roof (b + t)lbs/ft
IJ distributed weight of the Pv system is geater than 5 lbsff , see wKS 1 .
Step 2: Electrical Review o[ PV System (Calculations lor Electrical Diagram)
In order for a Pv system to be considered for an expedibd permit pmcess, the following must apply:
l PV modules, utility-interactive inverters, and combiner boxes are identified for use in PV sysrems
2 The PV array is composed of 4 senes strings or less per inverter.
f. The total inverter capacity has a continuous ac power output 1f,440 Watrs or less
4. The ac inrerconnection point is on the load side o[ service disconnecting means (6S0 64(B))
5. One of the standard elec(rical diagrams(El.l, El.la. El.lb.orEl I c) can be used to accurately represent I he PV
system. lnteractive PDF dragrams are available at www.solarabcs.org/permitting.
Fill out the standard electrical diagram completely. A guide to the electrical diagram is provided to help the arylicant
underctand each blanh to lll in. IJ the electrical system is more complex than the stdndard electrical diagrum can e.lJectively
communicate, ptovide an alternative diagrdm with appropriate detail.
