. EXPEDITED PERMIT PROCESS FOR SMALL-SCALE PV SYSTEMS
STANDARD STRINC SYSTEM
The informalion in this guideline is inrended to help local Jurisdicrions and conrractors identify when PV system installations
are simple. needing only a basic review and when an insGllation is more complex. It is likely that 50%-75% of all residenrial
systems will comply with these simple criteria. For projects that fail to meet the simple criteria, resolution steps have been
suggested to provide as a path to permu approval
Required Information Jor Perrnit:
I Site plan showing location of major components on the properry. This drawing need nor be exacrly to scale. bur it
should represent relative location of components at sire (see supplied example site plan). PV arrays on dwellings
with a S perimeter space at ridge and sides may not need separate nre service review.
2. Electrical diagram showing PV array configuration. wiring system, overcurrenr prorection. rnvertet disconnects,
required signs, and ac connection to building (see supplied srandard electrical diagram).
3. Specihcation sheets and installation manuals (if available) for all manufacrured componenrs including, bur not
limired ro, PV modules, inver|er(s). combiner box. disconnects, and mounring sysrem.
Step 1: Structural Review oI PV Array Mounting System

Step 2 ' Electrical Review of PV System (Calculations lor Electrical Diagram)
In order for a PV system to be considered for an expedited permit process, the following must apply:
l. PV modules, utility-interactive inverters, and combiner boxes are identified for use in PV sysrems.
2. The PV array is composed of 4 series strings or less per inverrer.
l. The rotal inverter capacity has a conrinuous ac power output 15,440 Watts or less
4. The ac inrerconnecrion poinr is on the load side of service disconnecting means (690.64(B)).
5. One ofthe srandard electrical diagrams (El.l, ELla, El.lb, or El.lc) can be used ro accurarely represenr the PV
system. Interactive PDF diagrams are available a( www.solarabcs.org/permirring.
Fill out the standard, electricql diagram complerely. A guide to the electrical diagram ts provided to help the opplicqnt
understand each blunk to fiIl in lf the eli ctricd system is more complex th,xn the standdrd (lefiriarl diagram can cfJectively

California Residentlal Code (CRC) Sect,on R314.1and R315.2 states in part that existing dwellings be
"retrofitted with smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. CRC Section R314.3 and R314.3.3 define
the requ ired locations.
A eo,i, boxes below must be checked:
/C^rbon monoxide alarms: Are installed outsrde of each sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of
bedrooms and also on each level of the dweiling. Alarms are required in bedrooms with gas-fired
appliances (i.e. hot water heater, cooktop, furnace) or a fireplace.
FsmoXealarms: Are installed in each room used for sleeping, in each haltway outside of a sleeping'room, and on each level of the dwelling.
Retrofitted detectors may be battery-operated for buildings where no interior alterations are
performed. Combination Smoke/CO alarms must comply with all applicable standards and be appro'red
by the State Fire Marshall {SFM). Battery life must be 10 year's.
I hereby certify that I am the contractor or the property owner of the above project. I further certify
that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms have been installed in compliance with the governlng
