EXPEDITED PERMIT PROCESS FOR SMALL-SCALE PV SYSTEMS
STANDARD STRING SYSTEM
The information in this guideline is intended ro help local jurisdicrions and conrracrors idenrify when pV sysrem insrallations
are simple, needing only a basic review and when an insEllation is more complex. Ir is likely rhar 50%-75% of all residenLial
systems will comply with these simple criteria. For projects that fail to meet the simple crireria. resolurion sreps have been
suggested to provide as a parh ro permir approval.
Required Infonnatioi for Pemit:
l. Site plan showing location of major componenrs on rhe properry. This drawing need nor be exacrly ro scale, but it
should represenr relative location of components at site (see supplied example site plan). pV arrays on dwellings
with a 3'perimeter space at ridge and sides may not need separate hre servtce review
2. Elecrical diagrarn showing PV array configuration, wiring system, overcurrenr prorection, inverter, disconnects,
required signs, and ac connection to building (see supplied standard elecrrical diagram).
3. SPecincation sheets and insnllation manuals (if available) for all manufactured componenrs including, but not
limited to, PV modules, inverter(s), combiner box. disconnec(s, and mountrnq sysrem h

State of California requires that smoke and carbon monoxjde (CO) alarms are installed in residential
b u ild in gs.
California Residentjal Code (CRC) Section R314.1and R315.2 states in part that existing dwellings be
"retrofitted with smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. CRC Section R314.3 and R314.3.3 define
the required locations.

E Carbon monoxide alarms: Are installed outside of each sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of
bedrooms and also on each level of the dwelling. Alarms are required in bedrooms with gas-fired
appliances (i. e. hot water heater, cooktop, furnace) or a fireplace.
E Smole alarms: Are installed in each room used for sleeping, in each hallway outside of a sleeping
room, and on each level of the dwelling.
Retrofitted detectors may be battery-operated for buildings where no interior alterations are
performed. Combination Smoke/CO alarms must comply with all applicable standards and be approved
by the State Fire Marshall {SFM). Battery life must be 10 years.
