EXPEDITED PERMIT PROCESS FOR PV SYSTEMS
STANDARD STRINC SYSTEM
The Solar America Board for Codes and Standards (Solar ABCS) Expedired permir pro,
cess provides a means to differenriate systems that can be permitted quickly and easily
due to their similarity wirh rhe majoriry of small-scale pV systems. Those systems wirh
unique characteristics may be handled with small addirions to this Expedited permir
Process or may require much more information, depending on the uniqueness of the
installation.
The following pages conrain forms for the Srandard String Sysrem to use wirh rhe Expe-
dited Permit Process. The Micro-lnverter, AC Module, and Supply-Side Connecrion forms
are also available as inreractive PDF files ar www.solarabcs.org/permirting In jurisdac-
tions thar have adopted the Expedited permir process for pV Systems, rhese forms can
be filled out elecrronically and submirced in eirher prinred [orm and via email. An elec-
tronic Format is used so thar the supplied information is srandardized and legible ior the
local jurisdicrion.

EXPEDITED PERMIT PROCESS FOR SMALL-SCALE PV SYSTEMS
STANDARD STRINC SYSTEM
The information in this guideline is intended to help local jurisdictions and contractors identify when Pv syslem installations
are simpfe, needing only a basic review and when an installation is more complex. Ir is likely rhar 50 % -75% of all residenrial
systems will comply with these simple criteria. For proJects that fail to meet the simple criteria, resolution steps have been
suggested lo provide as a path to permir approval.
Required InJonnation for Permit:
l. Site plan showing location of ma.1or components on the property. This drawing need not be exacdy to scale, but it
should represent relative location of components at site (see supplied example sire plan). PV arrays on dwellings
with a 3'perimeter space at ridge and sides may not need separate hre service review
2. Electrical diagram showing PV array connguration, wiring system, overcurrent protecrion, inverter, disconnects,
required signs, and ac connecrion to building (see supplied srandard elecrrical diagram).
3. Specifrcation sheets and installation manuals (if available) for all manufacrured componenrs including, but nor
limited to, PV modules, inverter(s), combiner box, disconnecrs, and mounring syscem.
Step 1 : Structural Review o[ PV Array Mounting System
ls the array to be mounted on a defined, permitted roof structure? Eyes Eno
Il No due to non-compliant roof or a ground mount, submit completed worksheet lor the structure WKS t .
Roof InJofination:
l. Is the roofing type lighrweighr (Yes = composirion, lighrweighr masonry, meral, erc.. )COMP SHINGLE
If No, submit completed worksheet Jor rooJ structure WKS 1 (No = heavy masonry, slate, etc . . .)
2. Does the roof have a single roof coveringf Eyes Eno
If No, submit completed worksheet Jor rooJ structure WKS 1 .
5. Provide method and rype of weatherproohng roof penerrarions (e.g. flashing, caulk)Flashing
Mounting Systeln Inforrnat ion:
1 . Is the mounting srructure an elgineered product designed to mount PV modules with no more than an 18" gap
benealh rhe module frames? E yes E r,lo
$ No, provide details oJ structural atta.chmcnt certijed by q design professional.
2. For manuFactured mounring systems, frll out information on the mounting sys[em below:
a. Mounting System Manufacturer EcoFasten Producr Name
"n6
Yo4"1g Rock it
b. Total Weigh t ot PV Modules 3n6 32115 712.4 lbs
c. Toral Number of Attachment Poinrs 22
d. Weight per Atrachmenl Point (b - c)32.4 bs (if greater than 45 lbs. see WKS I )
e Maximum Spacing Between Atnchment Points on a Rail 48 inches {see producr manual for
maximum spacing allowed based on maximum design wind speed)
t.Total Surface Area of PV Modules (square feeo 246.5 fc
Distributed Weight of PV Module on Roof (b + f)2.9 lbs/ftr
II distributed w€ight of the PV system is greater than 5 lbste, see WKSI .
Step 9: Electrical Review o[ PV System (Calculations lor Electrical Diagram)
In order for a PV system to be considered for an expedited permit process, the fotlowing must apply:
l. PV modules, utility-inreractive inverters, and combiner boxes are identifred for use in PV systems.
2. The PV array is composed of 4 series strings or less per inverter.
3. The total invener capacity has a conrinuous ac power output 13,440 Watts or less
4. The ac interconnecrion point is on the load side of service disconnecting means (690.64(8)).
5. Oneof the skndard electrical diagrams (E 1 . 1 , E I . I a, E I . I b, or E l I c) can be used ro accurarely represenr rhe PV
system. Interactive PDF diagrams are available at www.solarabcs.orgi permitting.
Fi out the standard electrical diq.gram completely A guide to the electrical diogram is provided to hetp the appticant
understand each blank to jll in. l.f the electrical system is more complex than the standard electrical diagratn can elJecttvely
communicote, provide an altefiatiye diagrqm with awropriate detail.
