The purpose of our review was to determine the adequacy of the existing structure to support the proposed installation of solar panels on the roof as shown on the panel layout plan. Based upon our review, we conclude that the existing structure is adequate to support the proposed solar panel installation. Design Parameters Code: California Building Code, 2019 Edition (2018 IBC) Risk Category: II Design wind speed, Vult: 95 mph (3-sec gust) Wind exposure category: C Seismic design category: D Existing Roof Structure Roof structure: 2x6 framing @ 16" o.c. Roofing material: composite shingles Roof pitch: 5:12 Connection to Roof Mounting connection: (1) 5/16" lag screw w/ min. 2.5" threaded embedment into framing at max. 48" o.c. along rails (2) rails per row of panels, evenly spaced; panel length perpendicular to the rails not to exceed 67 in. Rail cantilever shall not exceed 50% of connection spacing. Conclusions Based upon our review, we conclude that the existing structure is adequate to support the proposed solar panel installation. In the area of the solar array, other live loads will not be present or will be greatly reduced (2019 CBC, Section 1607.13.5). The gravity loads, and thus the stresses of the structural elements, in the area of the solar array are either decreased or increased by no more than 5%. Therefore, the requirements of Section 503.3 of the 2019 CEBC are met and the structure is permitted to remain unaltered. 651 W. Galena Park Blvd., Ste. 101 / Draper, UT 84020 / T (801) 990-1775 / F (801) 990-1776 / www.vectorse.com 1222 S Karen Avenue01/12/22 VSE Project Number: U4089.0085.211 John Le Residence 12/17/2021 The solar array will be flush-mounted (no more than 10" above the roof surface) and parallel to the roof surface. Thus, we conclude that any additional wind loading on the structure related to the addition of the proposed solar array is negligible. The attached calculations verify the capacity of the connections of the solar array to the existing roof against wind (uplift), the governing load case. Regarding seismic loads, we conclude that any additional forces will be small. Conservatively neglecting the weight of existing wall materials, the installation of the solar panels represents an increase in the total weight (and resulting seismic load) of 2.8%. Because the increase in lateral forces is less than 10%, this addition meets the requirements of the exception in Section 503.4 of the 2019 CEBC. Thus the existing lateral force resisting system is permitted to remain unaltered. Limitations Installation of the solar panels must be performed in accordance with manufacturer recommendations. All work performed must be in accordance with accepted industry-wide methods and applicable safety standards. The contractor must notify Vector Structural Engineering, LLC should any damage, deterioration or discrepancies between the as-built condition of the structure and the condition described in this letter be found. Connections to existing roof framing must be staggered, except at array ends, so as not to overload any existing structural member. The use of solar panel support span tables provided by others is allowed only where the building type, site conditions, site-specific design parameters, and solar panel configuration match the description of the span tables. The design of the solar panel racking (mounts, rails, etc.) and electrical engineering is the responsibility of others. Waterproofing around the roof penetrations is the responsibility of others. Vector Structural Engineering assumes no responsibility for improper installation of the solar array. It is likely that 50%-75% of all residential systems will comply with these simple criteria. For projects that fail to meet the simple criteria, resolution steps have been suggested to provide as a path to permit approval. Required Information for Permit: 1. Site plan showing location of major components on the property. This drawing need not be exactly to scale, but it should represent relative location of components at site (see supplied example site plan). PV arrays on dwellings with a 3’ perimeter space at ridge and sides may not need separate fire service review. 2. Electrical diagram showing PV array configuration, wiring system, overcurrent protection, inverter, disconnects, required signs, and ac connection to building (see supplied standard electrical diagram). 3. Specification sheets and installation manuals (if available) for all manufactured components including, but not limited to, PV modules, inverter(s), combiner box, disconnects, and mounting system. Step 1: Structural Review of PV Array Mounting System Is the array to be mounted on a defined, permitted roof structure? l Yes l No If No due to non-compliant roof or a ground mount, submit completed worksheet for the structure WKS1. Roof Information: 1. Is the roofing type lightweight (Yes = composition, lightweight masonry, metal, etc…)__________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ If No, submit completed worksheet for roof structure WKS1 (No = heavy masonry, slate, etc…). 2. Does the roof have a single roof covering? l Yes l No If No, submit completed worksheet for roof structure WKS1. 3. Provide method and type of weatherproofing roof penetrations (e.g. flashing, caulk).____________________________ Mounting System Information: 1. Is the mounting structure an engineered product designed to mount PV modules with no more than an 18” gap beneath the module frames? l Yes l No If No, provide details of structural attachment certified by a design professional. 2. For manufactured mounting systems, fill out information on the mounting system below: a. Mounting System Manufacturer ___________Product Name and Model#________________________________ b. Total Weight of PV Modules and Rails ___________lbs c. Total Number of Attachment Points____________ d. Weight per Attachment Point (b÷c)_________________lbs (if greater than 45 lbs, see WKS1) e. Maximum Spacing Between Attachment Points on a Rail ______________inches (see product manual for maximum spacing allowed based on maximum design wind speed) f. Total Surface Area of PV Modules (square feet)_________________ ft 2 g. Distributed Weight of PV Module on Roof (b÷f)_______________ lbs/ft2 If distributed weight of the PV system is greater than 5 lbs/ft2, see WKS1. Step 2: Electrical Review of PV System (Calculations for Electrical Diagram) In order for a PV system to be considered for an expedited permit process, the following must apply: 1. PV modules, utility-interactive inverters, and combiner boxes are identified for use in PV systems. 2. The PV array is composed of 4 series strings or less per inverter. 3. The total inverter capacity has a continuous ac power output 13,440 Watts or less 4. The ac interconnection point is on the load side of service disconnecting means (690.64(B)). 5. One of the standard electrical diagrams (E1.1, E1.1a, E1.1b, or E1.1c) can be used to accurately represent the PV system. Interactive PDF diagrams are available at www.solarabcs.org/permitting. Fill out the standard electrical diagram completely. A guide to the electrical diagram is provided to help the applicant understand each blank to fill in. If the electrical system is more complex than the standard electrical diagram can effectively communicate, provide an alternative diagram with appropriate detail. 1222 S Karen Avenue01/12/22 7 PV MODULES JUNCTION BOX ROOF SIZED DETERMINED IN FIELD 8 9 CONDUIT RUN IS SURFACE MOUNTED (ACTUAL CONDUIT RUNS TO BE DETERMINED IN THE FIELD) 6 OPTIMIZER (TYPICAL FOR EACH MODULE) NOT USED5.1 10 NOT USED 0' 5' 10' SYMBOL LEGEND = FLUE / PLUMBING VENT = MECHANICAL VENT MAIN SERVICE PANEL AC DISCONNECT UTILITY METER2 1 3 INVERTER & INTEGRATED DC DISCONNECT5 W E S NCALIFORNIA FIRE CODE SETBACKS 3' 4 NOT USED ROOF A 8 9 7 6 1 2 3 5 CEC 110.26 3' SHEET TITLE SHEET # PROJECT # SYSTEM SIZE DESIGNER: DATE:10/19/2021 11:07:30 PM REV DATE ---- DESCRIPTION ---- ---- ---- ---- ----DATE: SATER ELECTRIC 1709 Rimpau Avenue, Suite 106 Corona, CA 92881 951-553-6944 SIGNATURE: CONTRACTOR LICENSE: 10/19/2021 11:07:30 PM ROOF/SITE PLAN PV2 1222 S Karen Avenue01/12/22 4 1 J-BOX 1 MODULES/OPTIMIZERS IN A STRING + - RED BLACK SE SE SE 3 MODULES/OPTIMIZERS IN A STRING + - RED BLACK SE SE SE L1 L2 G L1 L2 5 L1 L2 L1 L2 G INTEGRATED MODULE & RACKING GND METHOD UL 2703 APPROVED 2 4 L1 L2 G N 3 28.2 910 N G G 8 UTILITYDISCO VISIBLE BLADE LOCKABLE W/UTILITY ACCESS 24/7 11 GND ELECT.
