State of california require5 that smoke and carbon monoxide {CO) alarms are installed in residentlal
buildihes.
California Residentiat Code {CRC} Section R314.1and R315.2 state! in part that existing dwellings be
"retrofitted with smoke alarms and carbon mono)(ide alarms. CRC Section R314-3 and R314.3.3 define
the requared locations-

Efcarbon monoxide alarms: are rnstalled outside of each 5leeping area an the immediate vicinityof
bedrooms and also on each level of the dwelling. Alarms are requked in bedrooms wlth gasjired
appliances (i.e. hot water heater, cooktop, furnace) or a fireplace.
lElsmote alarms: Are installed in eech room used for sleeping, in each hallway outside ofa sleeping
room, and on each levelofthe dwelling.
Retrofitted detectors may be bEttery-operated for buildings where no int€rior elterations ere
performed. Combination Smoke/CO alarms murt comply with all applicable standards and be approv€d
by the State tire Ma.shall (StM). 8attery life must be 10 years.
