Max panel width is 46 inches. The Panels are fastened together by use of Posi-Loc fastening devices along the edges. Flame spread index and smoke developed index ratings are less than 75 and 450 respectively for the core material. Surface burning characteristics of the finished building unit do not exceed 25 for flame spread index and 450 for smoke developed index. Flash ignition and self-ignition temperatures exceed the minimum required temperatures of 600°F and 800°F, respectively. Kolpak freestanding walk-in coolers and freezers constructed of panels described above are approved with the following requirements: 1. The coolers and freezers may be installed in the interior of buildings and outdoors. 2. Height of units shall not exceed 20 feet. 3. Plans and calculations shall bear the stamp and signature of a licensed civil or structural engineer or architect. 6. Refer to attached tables for allowable panel loads. No increase in allowable stress is allowed for the values indicated above for short duration of loads due to wind or seismic forces. 7. Where the aggregate enclosed area of the cooler and/or freezer exceeds 400 square feet, one of the two following conditions shall be met: a. A thermal barrier of shall be installed to separate the foam plastic from the interior of the building per Section 2306.4 of the Los Angeles Building Code. b. The cooler/freezer shall be protected by an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section 903.3.1.1 of the Los Angeles Building Code. Furthermore, where the unit is within a building, both the cooler/freezer and that part of the building in which it is located shall be sprinklered. 8. Panels fabrication shall follow regulations and only be fabricated by a Type I licensed shop that is approved by the Los Angeles Building Department. Type II fabricators are required when piping or other utilities are in the walls or ceilings. Shops not licensed by the Los Angeles City Building Department will invalidate this approval. DISCUSSION The report is in compliance with the 2020 City of Los Angeles Building Code. The approval is based on the foam plastic insulation requirements of Section 2603 and structural tests and analysis. DETAILS Kolpak prefabricated wall and ceiling panels consist of a 4-inch-thick minimum 2-part spray-in polyurethane foam core with 26 gage (0.019”) aluminum coated galvanized steel, 16-22 gage galvanized steel (uncoated or galvanealed), or 0.040” aluminum skin. Part A of the polyurethane foam is Voracor CE 108 Isocyanate by DOW, part B is Voracor CD 2101 by DOW. The average in-place density of the foam is 2.22 pounds per cubic foot. Max panel width is 46 inches. The Panels are fastened together by use of Posi-Loc fastening devices along the edges. Flame spread index and smoke developed index ratings are less than 75 and 450 respectively for the core material. Surface burning characteristics of the finished building unit do not exceed 25 for flame spread index and 450 for smoke developed index. Flash ignition and self-ignition temperatures exceed the minimum required temperatures of 600°F and 800°F, respectively. Kolpak freestanding walk-in coolers and freezers constructed of panels described above are approved with the following requirements: 1. The coolers and freezers may be installed in the interior of buildings and outdoors. 2. Height of units shall not exceed 20 feet. 3. The panels shall be considered combustible and may be installed only in areas where combustible materials are permitted by the Code. 5. Complete design calculations, including the panel connections to the foundation or building substrate, shall be submitted to the Structural Plan Check Section for each project. Plans and calculations shall bear the stamp and signature of a licensed civil or structural engineer or architect. 6. Refer to attached tables for allowable panel loads. No increase in allowable stress is allowed for the values indicated above for short duration of loads due to wind or seismic forces. 7. Where the aggregate enclosed area of the cooler and/or freezer exceeds 400 square feet, one of the two following conditions shall be met: a. A thermal barrier of shall be installed to separate the foam plastic from the interior of the building per Section 2306.4 of the Los Angeles Building Code. b. The cooler/freezer shall be protected by an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section 903.3.1.1 of the Los Angeles Building Code. Furthermore, where the unit is within a building, both the cooler/freezer and that part of the building in which it is located shall be sprinklered. 8. Panels fabrication shall follow regulations and only be fabricated by a Type I licensed shop that is approved by the Los Angeles Building Department. Type II fabricators are required when piping or other utilities are in the walls or ceilings. Shops not licensed by the Los Angeles City Building Department will invalidate this approval. DISCUSSION The report is in compliance with the 2020 City of Los Angeles Building Code. The approval is based on the foam plastic insulation requirements of Section 2603 and structural tests and analysis.
