Mandatory Sign Lighting Controls NOTES: 1. The Mandatory Measures (sign lighting controls) are required for compliance with the sign lighting Standards. Mandatory Sign Lighting Controls The person signing the Certificate of Compliance Declaration Statement shall answer all ofthe following questions ifthey are responsible for complying with the sign lighting control requirements. All electrical signs require electric plancheck and permit. 1. Manufacturer's instructions are required at the time of submittal. C-11: 3-21-2011 2. Submit detailed installation instructions including diagrams to the Building Department for plan review at the time of submittal. Plans must include appropriate items noted by this bulletin. 3. Cash or surety bond in the amount of $200.00 is required at time of issuance for each address. The cash or surety bond will be refunded after all required finals. A building permit is also required - except for open or highlight neon lighting. Installation Requirements: . CONTACT FIELD INSPECTOR PRIOR TO SIGN INSTALLATION. (SEE SECTION G OF THIS BULLETIN) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Conductors and equipment shall comply with California Electric Code Article 600. All metal parts of a sign shall be bonded in the manner specified in Article 250. Isolated metal parts are permitted to be bonded by using an external green insulated conductor. Equipment grounding & bonding conductors must be sized by 110.26 and protected from physical damage. Minimum size is 14 AWG. CEC 600.7 A listed disconnect switch in the power supply primary, shall be installed within sight of sign or have permanently installed means for locking in an "OFF" position. This is also true for a transformer enclosure. CEC 600.6 A listed receptacle or an approved termination device shall be used for each neon electrode. To relieve stress at terminations, tubing shall be supported with listed tube supports in an approved manner within six inches of electrode connection. CEC 600.41 & 600.42 Every electric sign of any type shall be listed by an approved testing laboratory and shall be installed in conformance with this listing. That includes "1 of x", "2 of x" labeling for each separate unit of a multi-unit sign. CEC 600.3 All "can" letters and transformers housings shall have section labels that are readily visible after installation. CEC 600.4 Transformers shall be located where accessible and be securely fastened in place. Page 1 of 2 When not inside the sign, they need a 3 foot high x 3 foot wide x 3 foot deep workspace. Transformers are permitted to be located in attics or canopies provided there is a passageway at least 3 feet high x 2 feet wide with a minimum 12 inch catwalk/walkway from the point of entry. Transformers must be securely fastened and independent of T- bar when above a suspended ceiling. No part of sign mav be fed with flexible cord when located above T-bar ceilings. CEC 600.21(E&F) & 400.8 8. Adequate illumination shall be provided for all working spaces about electrical equipment. This applies to attics and canopies when entry is required to service or inspect the equipment. At least one switch is required at entrance. CEC 110.34 & 600.21 9. Doorway to an attic or canopy space shall be minimum 3 feet by 2 feet wide. CEC 600.21(E) E. Open neon outline or highlight lighting. 1. To be treated as a sign by this department. However, Section D-5 & D-6 of this bulletin will not apply. 2. Neon tubing shall be located where not normally exposed to physical damage. Open neon tubing below 9 feet shall be protected from physical damage by an approved shielding method. CEC 600.30 and 110.34(E) F. Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Signs 1. Will be treated as a sign by this department. All sign rules in sections A, B, C, D, F, and G will apply as appropriate. 2. LED illumination for signage must be a listed or recognized component. Many LED manufacturers specify particular brands and models of transformers some do not. Manufacturer information to clarify this issue is required on LED sign plans. 3. Unlisted LEDs may not be used in an electrical sign or as permanently installed illumination. 110.3 4. Please have packaging or catalog cut-sheets on hand for inspector to review when LED modules do not bear listing symbols. G. Inspections '2 1. Contact an Electrical Inspector one (1) workday (minimum) in advance of installation to arrange a site meeting on dav of installation. 2. Call for inspection Monday through Friday, 8:00- 8:30 a.m. at (714) 647-5821. Approved prints and the job card must be on site for inspection. Class 2 power supply, Model 701285. 1. Power supply is intended to power LEDs in signs. 2. Power supply model is intended for permanent connection only. 3. These units are suitable for use in dr'y location without a need for an additional enclosure and in damp locations when installed inside a sign that complies with the Exclusion of Water Test in UL 48. 4. If the power supply output wiring is extended longer than the 5 foot leads provided, the spliced connections shall be made inside a Listed junction box suitable for the application included with proper grounding. Class 2 power supply, Cat. Nos. 701349, 701351. 1. Power supply models 701349 and 701351 are intended to power LEDs in signs. 2. Power supply model 701349 and 701351 are intended for permanent connection only. 3. These units are suitable for use in dry location without a need for an additional enclosure and in damp locations when installed inside a sign that complies with the Exclusion of Water Test in UL 48. 5. These power supplies have two outputs. The Class 2 output circuits are not to be conductively connected to each other in the sign by wiring or other type of component. 6. The maximum rated output power for Model 701349 is 42 watts at each Class 2 output. The maximum rated output power for Model 701351 is 60 watts at each Class 2 output. Class 2 power supplies, Models 701507-MOD, 701507-MOD277 (AD060S277/347-SLN). All may be followed by alphanumeric sumx. 1. These power supplies have a maximum of one Class 2 output. The output of these power supplies has been evaluated to Class 2 output requirements for dc circuits. 2. These products with Class 2 outputs are suitable for use in dry, damp and wet locations. 3. In the end product, power supply spacing to other heat producing components shall be minimum 4 inches spacing to sidewalls, and minimum 2 inches spacing to top of enclosure. 4. When used in wet locations, each unit shall be provided with Listed (QCRV) 1/2 inch, liquid tight conduit fittings on primary circuit. 5. When used in a cord connected product, the need for conducting a leakage current test shall be considered in the end product. 6.
