RE Report of Geotechnical Observation and Testing of Swimming Pool
Backfill Operations - Located at 4006 West Flight Avenue, in the City of
Santa Ana, California
Dear Mr. Espenschied:
Pursuant lo your request, this firm has provided this geotechnical report to summarize
the observation and testing performed by this firm for the swimming pool backfill
operations at the above referenced project. Our geotechnical services pertaining to the
backfill of the excavation are summarized in the subsequent sections of this report.
Backfill O Derations
The existing pool shell was left intact and two 3 feet by 3 feet holes, one in the middle
and one in the shallow end of the pool and one 6 feet by 6 feet hole in the deep end of
the pool were placed through the bottom to allow for drainage. The upper 2 feet of the
pool walls were removed. The fill area was approximately 28 feet by 15 feet with a
maximum depth of 8 feet. The pool was backfilled with approximately 2 feet of 1 inch
minus crushed concrete. The crushed concrete was overlain with a filter fabric prior to
the placement of compacted fill soils. Fill material placed was compacted to a minimum
of 90% of the laboratory standard in lifts not in excess of eight inches in thickness. A
rubber{ire Bobcat loader was utilized for compaction control. A water hose provided
moisture control.

Laboratorv/Field Testinq
The relative compaction was determined by Sand Cone Method (ASTM: D1556) and by
the Drive Tube Method (ASTM: D2937). The maximum density of the fill soils was
obtained by the laboratory standard (ASTM: D1557) and results are shown on Table l.
Tests were performed a minimum of every 500 cubic yards placed and every two feet in
depth of lill placed. A summary of the compaction tests of the backfill operations is given
in Table ll with locations shown on the accompanying plan-
