Beyond passing your notification on to City Engineer Robert Eichblatt via Exec- utive Director of Public Services, David Grosse, there is very little else the Bowers Museum can do which will speed up this process. Could I suggest that since your offices are 'in the same building with Public VJorks/Public Services, etc., that you cormunicate directly with them since responsibil ity for al1 City buildings l ies ultimately within City Hall. Our evaluation is based on our examination of accessible portions of the Museum building, and adjoining structures, our review of the existing plans, dated December 28, 1931, and our preliminary calculations based on the requ i rements of the 0rd inance. STRUCTURAL FEATURES OF THE MUSEUM The Museum building is an unreinforced brick bearing wall building on a concrete foundation. lt has a partial second floor constructed of a reinforced conc re te and ove r concrete The patio is enclosed on the north wood posts embedded in 4 feot high supporting a wood framed roof, xcept over the balcony (now office space), is const ructed of reinforced supported on st ructura I steel arbor built of a single line of piers, l2 feet on center and beam and slab system. the south entry room slabs reinforced wi th re mesh and , the roof purlins and trusses, The building is irregular in plan and has a first story area of approximately 6500 square feet, and a second story of approx imate ly 4100 square feet. North of the building and directly adjacent is a concrete building of recent construction. This is structural ly independent of the unreinforced brick building. lt is not under the jurisdiction of the 0rdinance and is not within the scope of this report. East of the building, forming south and east sides of a large patio is an open arcade built of arched unreinforced brick hral ls with a wood plank and beam roof. The south and east wings of the arcade meet at an unreinforced brick bell tower with some reinforced concrete elements built into its structure. The north end of the east wing of the arcade ends at an unreinforced brick open pavilion with r"rcod framed roof, by an br ick At the northeast corner of the building is a wood framed trellis of about 1000 square feet and supported at the north on 3 feet square by 13 feet high brick piers and at the south by a 25-inch thick by l4 feet hi9h, unbraced br ick wal l. d#ulieeso a 8 t-502 JUN 29 APPLICATION OF THE ORDINANCE TO THE I.IUSEUI4 The building has a rating classification lll according to the Ordinance on the basis that exterior walls are braced by cross walls less than 40 feet apart in each story. We find that the building does not comply with the ordinance in the fol lowing respects: l./a I ls having unsupported height or length ratios (H/T) exceeding 10. and in which tension stresses would occur under normal-to-plane seismic loading are at the fol lowing locations. (Room numbers and names are as assigned on the archi tectural plans. ) north, east and west wa I ls.a. Room b. Room o c. All second stor brick wal ls except the north , the north wall of the balcony/ south and west walls, and the portion th e east wa ll that is common with entry room wal I of room vestibule, and cor r i dor. he north and south walls of the 2. lnadequately braced parts of the building are: a Unbr room ac parapets around perimeter of the entry The ch imney. A "flying buttressrr h,est of the chimney. The l4 feet high freestanding wall north of the exter ior s ta i rway. Roofs that tend to brace walls or parts of the building but which are inadequately anchored to them and do not have shear nor chord tension capacity to resist the appl ied forces if they were anchored are at the following locations: a.Over room (entry). This roof is constructed of Ce I otex ah d floor tile on wood stripping, Over the balcony (presently office space). This roof is constructed of wood boards on purl ins. Mortar in the building is hard and in good condition. tJe expect that the tests required by the Ordinance will allow the highest permitted shear capacity. 0n this basis the walls considered as shear walls appear to have b c d 3 b dE'Jsllfues o 2 o d I -bUZ JUN ZY adequate capacity to resist in-plane forces excePt that Preliminary calculations indicate the gq;sibility of higher than allowable shear stresses in the north wall of room (9). The fol lowing structures, which are independent of the building' have unreinforced masonry elements that u,ould develop tension stresses due to the Ordinance requi red design forces and thus do not comply: '1. The arcade piers due to forces normal to the line of a rches . The arbor piers north of the Patio. The trel I is columns northeast of the bui ld in9. North, west and east walls of the pavilion at the north end of the arcade. 5. The following parts of the campanile: a. The walls around the bel I receSs. forces normal to theThe arched butt resses for buttresses. b IMPL I CAT IONS OF F IND INGS The strengthening of the roof of Room may be done over the existing roof and Bracing for the arcade piers, the l4 feet high freestanding wall north of the exteri;r stairway, arbor piers, trellis columns' the Pavilion walls, and the arched buttresses of the campanile wi ll probably have to be exposed and may be accomplished by use of buttresses matching the style of existing buttresses. other strengthening work can probably be done without disruption of historic fea tures of the bu i I d i n9 , lf you have any questions regarding this report, please donrt hesitate to contact us.
