All electrical signs require electric plancheck and permit. 1. Manufacturer's instructions are required at the time of submittal C-11: 3-21-2011 2. Submit detailed installation instructions including diagrams to the Building Department for plan review at the time of submittal. Plans must include appropriate items noted by this bulletin. 3. Cash or surety bond in the amount of $200.00 is required at time of issuance for each address. The cash or surety bond will be refunded after all required finals. A building permit is also required - except for open or highlight neon lighting. Installation Requirements: CONTACT FIELD INSPECTOR PRIOR TO SIGN INSTALLATION. (SEE SECTION G OF THIS BULLETIN) 1. Conductors and equipment shall comply with California Electric Code Article 600. 2. All metal parts of a sign shall be bonded in the manner specified in Article 250. Isolated metal parts are permitted to be bonded by using an external green insulated conductor. Equipment grounding & bonding conductors must be sized by 110.26 and protected from physical damage. Minimum size is 14 AWG. CEC 600.7 3. A listed disconnect switch in the power supply primary, shall be installed within sight of sign or have permanently installed means for locking in an "OFF" position. This is also true for a transformer enclosure. CEC 600.6 4. A listed receptacle or an approved termination device shall be used for each neon electrode. To relieve stress at terminations, tubing shall be supported with listed tube supports in an approved manner within six inches·of electrode connection. CEC 600.41 & 600.42 5. Every electric sign of any type shall be listed by an approved testing laboratory and shall be installed in conformance with this listing. That includes "1 of x", "2 of x" labeling for each separate unit of a multi-unit sign. CEC 600.3 6. All "can" letters and transformers housings shall have section labels that are readily visible after installation. CEC 600.4 7. Transformers shall be located where accessible and be securely fastened in place. Page 1 of 2 O 0 m P 5 When not inside the sign, they need a 3 foot high x 3 foot wide x 3 foot deep workspace. Transformers are permitted to be located in attics or canopies provided there is a passageway at least 3 feet high x 2 feet wide with a minimum 12 inch catwalk/walkway from the point of entry. Transformers must be securely fastened and independent of T- bar when above a suspended ceiling. No part of sign mav be fed with flexible cord when located above T-bar ceilinqs. CEC 600.21(E&F) & 400.8 8. Adequate illumination shall be provided for all working spaces about electrical equipment. This applies to attics and canopies when entry is required to service or inspect the equipment. At least one switch is required at entrance. CEC 110.34 & 600.21 9. Doorway to an attic or canopy space shall be minimum 3 feet by 2 feet wide. CEC 600.21(E) E. Open neon outline or highlight lighting. 1. To be treated as a sign by this department. However, Section D-5 & D-6 of this bulletin will not apply. 2. Neon tubing shall be located where not normally exposed to physical damage. Open neon tubing below 9 feet shall be protected from physical damage by an approved shielding method. CEC 600.30 and 110.34(E) F. Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Signs 1. Will be treated as a sign by this department. All sign rules in sections A, B, C, D, F, and G will apply as appropriate. 2. LED illumination for signage must be a listed or recognized component. Many LED manufacturers specify particular brands and models of transformers some do not. Manufacturer information to clarify this issue is required on LED sign plans. 3. Unlisted LEDs may not be used in an electrical sign or as permanently installed illumination. 110.3 4. Please have packaging or catalog cut-sheets on hand for inspector to review when LED modules do not bear listing symbols. G. Inspections 1. Contact an Electrical Inspector one (1) workday (minimum) in advance of installation to arrange a site meeting on dav of installation. 2. Call for inspection Monday through Friday, 8:00- 8:30 a.m. at (714) 647-5821. Approved prints and the job card must be on site for inspection. This includas proper grounding and bonding ofthe sign. 1. Refer to the drawing included with the letter sel that depicts the arrangement of the subassemblies. 2. Unroll paper pattern. and tape to substrate. Level and center pattern on wall. Drill holes for secondary low voitage whips and mounting holes, and then remove pattern- Mount letters on the wall using the drawing as a guide. If letter set does not have rivet nuts. remove faces push secondary low voltage whips through substrate. mount letters onto substrate, and then replace faces. If the letterset does have rhel nuts, install threaded rod into fivet nuts then push secondary low voltage whips (run in metal conduit) through substrate and secure with hardware from the back side of substrate. 3. Refer to wiring diagram below (igure 1) and the tansformer breakdown diagram (provided with letter set) to sprce the secondary conductors. Each secondary circuit has a dedicated transformer and is color coded on the transformer breakdown sheet Connect all of the positive leads (red or white insulation) from each lettef in the secondaty circuit together in parallel using UL approved wire nuts or crimp connectors (crimped with manufacturer's specified ctimping tool). Next connect all of the negative leads (black insulation) from each letterthe secondary circuit together in parallel using UL approved wire nuts or crimp connectors (crimped with manufacturer's specified crimping tool). Finally, connect all of the ground leads (bare wire with no insulation) from each letter the secondary circuit together in parallel using Ul appmved wire nuts or crimp connectors (crimped with manufacturer's specified crimping tool). Repeat this process for each secondary circuit. 4. If a Sloan damp location rated transfonner is supplied, no transformer box is required (skip to step 6). If any other transformer is supplied, a transformer box will also be supplied. In this case, mount the transformer boxes; OPEN SIDE UP, as close as possible to the center ofthe circuit that will be powering. [t should be mounted at the same height as the letter set to minimize whip lengths. Next, install the transformer in the box as specified per the transformer box manufacturer's inst,uctions included. 5. Route the three secondary circuit leads (positbe. negative and ground) inside the transformer box 6. Connect the three secondafy circuit leads (positive. negative and ground) to the transformer and/or transformer box as specified per the transformer and/or tiansformer box manufacturer's instructions included. 7.
