Code references are to the 2010 California Electrical Code (CEC) All signs require Planning Department approval. All electrical signs require electric plancheck and permit. 1. Manufacturer's instructions are required at the time of submittal. C-11: 3-21-2011 2. Submit detailed installation instructions including diagrams to the Building Department for plan review at the time of submittal. Plans must include appropriate items noted by this bulletin. 3. Cash or surety bond in the amount of $200.00 is required at time of issuance for each address. The cash or surety bond will be refunded after all required finals. A building permit is also required - except for open or highlight neon lighting. Installation Requirements: CONTACT FIELD INSPECTOR PRIOR TO SIGN INSTALLATION. (SEE SECTION G OF THIS BULLETIN) 1. Conductors and equipment shall comply with California Electric Code Article 600. 2. All metal parts of a sign shall be bonded in the manner specified in Article 250. Isolated metal parts are permitted to be bonded by using an external green insulated conductor. Equipment grounding & bonding conductors must be sized by 110.26 and protected from physical damage. Minimum size is 14 AWG. CEC 600.7 3. A listed disconnect switch in the power supply primary, shall be installed within sight of sign or have permanently installed means for locking in an "OFF" position. This is also true for a transformer enclosure. CEC 600.6 4. A listed receptacle or an approved termination device shall be used for each neon electrode. To relieve stress at terminations, tubing shall be supported with listed tube supports in an approved manner within six inches of electrode connection. CEC 600.41 & 600.42 5. Every electric sign of any type shall be listed by an approved testing laboratory and shall be installed in conformance with this listing. That includes "l of x", "2 of x" labeling for each separate unit of a multi-unit sign. CEC 600.3 6. All "can" letters and transformers housings shall have section labels that are readily visible after installation. CEC 600.4 7. Transformers shall be located where accessible and be securely fastened in place. Page 1 of 2 When not inside the sign, they need a 3 foot high x 3 foot wide x 3 foot deep workspace. Transformers are permitted to be located in attics or canopies provided there is a passageway at least 3 feet high x 2 feet wide with a minimum 12 inch catwalk/walkway from the point of entry. Transformers must be securely fastened and independent of T- bar when above a suspended ceiling. No part of sign mav be fed with flexible cord when located above T-bar ceilinqs. CEC 600.21(E&F) & 400.8 8. Adequate illumination shall be provided for all working spaces about electrical equipment. This applies to attics and canopies when entry is required to service or inspect the equipment. At least one switch is required at entrance. CEC 110.34 & 600.21 9. Doorway to an attic or canopy space shall be minimum 3 feet by 2 feet wide. CEC 600.21(E) E. Open neon outline or highlight lighting. 1. To be treated as a sign by this department. However, Section D-5 & D-6 of this bulletin will not apply. 2. Neon tubing shall be located where not normally exposed to physical damage. Open neon tubing below 9 feet shall be protected from physical damage by an approved shielding method. CEC 600.30 and 110.34(E) F. Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Signs 1. Will be treated as a sign by this department. All sign rules in sections A, B, C, D, F, and G will apply as appropriate. 2. LED illumination for signage must be a listed or recognized component. Many LED manufacturers specify particular brands and models of transformers some do not. Manufacturer information to clarify this issue is required on LED sign plans. 3. Unlisted LEDs may not be used in an electrical sign or as permanently installed illumination. 110.3 4. Please have packaging or catalog cut-sheets on hand for inspector to review when LED modules do not bear listing symbols. G. Inspections 1. Contact an Electrical Inspector one (1) workday (minimum) in advance of installation to arrange a site meeting on day of installation. 2. Call for inspection Monday through Friday, 8:00- 8:30 a.m. at (714) 647-5821. Approved prints and the job card must be on site for inspection. Class 2 Low Voltage Connectors, Model LVC2, LVC4, SNAP-KONEK 111, and STICK-KONEK. 1. These devices are not suitable for interrupting the flow of current by connecting or disconnecting. 2. These products are only suitable for connection to a Class 2 power source, Class 2 supply rated max. 15 Volts AC or max. 30 Volts DC or less. 3. These products have not been evaluated for use when connected to a power source that does not comply with Class 2 voltage and energy limits. 4. These products are suitable for use in dry, damp and wet locations. 5. These products are not required to be enclosed or protected from the weather in the end product. 6. Modules can be installed to interconnect leads in the field or pre-installed. 7. These products may be secured in place in the end product by mechanical securement or double sided adhesive tape. 8. For Model LVC2 and LVC4, suitable for connecting stranded wires which are 18, 20 or 22 AWG with compatible wire guide inserts. 9. For Model SNAP-KONEK Ill, suitable for connecting single conductor per channel either AWM wires 18-24 AWG, or Power- Limited Circuit Cables type CL3P, CL3R, CL3, CLBX, CL2P, CUR, CL2, CL2X and PLTC. 10. The Model STICK-KONEK base and button are used to join LED strips, LED bars, or LED leads wires. MAGTECH INDUSTRIES CORP 5625-A S ARVILLE ST E314969 LAS VEGAS, NV 89118 Class 2 LED Module, Cat. The output of these power supplies has been evaluated to Class 2 output requirements for dc circuits. 2. These products with Class 2 outputs are suitable for use in dry, damp and wet locations. 3. In the end product, power supply spacing to other heat producing components shall be minimum 4 inches spacing to sidewalls, and minimum 2 inches spacing to top of enclosure. 4. When used in wet locations, each unit shall be provided with Listed (QCRV) 1/2 inch, liquid tight conduit fittings on both primary and secondary circuits. These products shall be mounted in equipment, which provide ·a suitable overall enclosure. 4. These products are not required to be enclosed or protected from the weather. Sign accessories, Class 2 LED power supplies, Model MB-12760-12V Multi Drive Series Maxbrite LED power supply. 1. These products are only suitable for use in dry, damp and wet locations and supplied with a Class 2 power source rated 12 Volt DC or less. 2. When units are connected to a Class 2 circuit, they are not to draw a total wattage of greater than the secondary or output rating of the Class 2 supply. 3. These products are not required to be enclosed or protected from the weather in the end product. 4. These products may be secured in place in the end product by any means available. Toggle Switch Boot, Model MB-TS20B. 1. This switch boot was evaluated for use on a MaxBrite toggle switch(WOYR2)/E355116 part number MB-TS20, with 19 mm long actuator mounted on a 12mm tall threaded stem, with a 12 x 1.Omm thread. Suitability of any other switch size shall be determined in the end product. 2. The suitability of the switch ratings shall be determined in the end product. 3. This product is acceptable for use in dry, damp and wet locations. 4. The water exclusion must be determined in the end product. Class 2 LED Drivers, Models MDS27760-12, DS12745-12, MDS12760-12, SLS27720-12, SLS27730-12, MDS12060-12, TPS 12060-12, TPS27760-12. 1. The output of this component complies with Class 2 requirements in the Standard for Class 2 Power Units, UL 1310. 2. In the end product, power supply spacing to other heat producing components shall be min. 2 inches spacing to sidewalls, and min. 2 inches spacing to top of enclosure. 3. These products shall be enclosed in the end product. 4. These power supplies are suitable for use in dry and damp locations. 5. These devices are intended for factory installation only. 6. This Class 2 power supply is not provided with any grounding. The enclosure must be grounded in the end product. Sign accessories, Class 2 LED power supplies, Models SLS27730-12V, SLS27730-24V, SLS27760-12V and SLS27760-24V. 1. The units have been evaluated using a resistive load resulting in an output rated current of (1) 2.5 A for SLS27730-12V, (2) 1.25 A for SLS27730-24V, (3) 5 A for SLS27760-12V, (4) 2.5 A for SLS27760-24V respectively. The need for repeating tests related to heating and the isolated output shall be considered in the end product. 2. The units have been tested at 40°C ambient. The measured maximum surface temperatures are as follows. Acceptable operation at a higher temperature should be determined in end products.
