Box 1988 (M-19)ELECTRICAL SIGN Santa Ana, CA 92702 REQUIREMENTS(714) 647-5800 IlgV www.sa nta-ana. org Code references are to the 2010 California Electrical Code (CEC) All signs require Planning Department approval. All electrical signs require electric plancheck and permit. 1. Manufacturer's instructions are required at the time of submittal C-11: 3-21-2011 2. Submit detailed installation instructions including diagrams to the Building Department for plan review at the time of submittal. Plans must include appropriate items noted by this bulletin. 3. Cash or surety bond in the amount of $200.00 is required at time of issuance for each address. The cas;h or surety bond will be refunded after all required finals. A building permit is also required - except for open or highlight neon lighting. Installation Requirements: CONTACT FIELD INSPECTOR PRIOR TO SIGN INSTALLATION. (SEE SECTION G OF THIS BULLETIN) 1. Conductors and equipment shall comply with California Electric Code Article 600. 2. All metal parts of a sign shall be bonded in the manner specified in Article 250. Isolated metal parts are permitted to be bonded by using an external green insulated conductor. Equipment grounding & bonding conductors must be sized by 110.26 and protected from physical damage. Minimum size is 14 AWG. CEC 600.7 3. A listed disconnect switch in the power supply primary, shall be installed within sight of sign or have permanently installed means for locking in an "OFF" position. This is also true for a transformer enclosure. CEC 600.6 4. A listed receptacle or an approved termination device shall be used for each neon electrode. To relieve stress at terminations, tubing shall be supported with listed tube supports in an approved manner within six inches of electrode connection. CEC 600.41 & 600.42 5. Every electric sign of any type shall be listed by an approved testing laboratory and shall be installed in conformance with this listing. That includes "1 of x", "2 of x" labeling for each separate unit of a multi'-unit sign. CEC 600.3 6. All "can" letters and transformers housings shall have section labels that are readily visible after installation. CEC 600.4 7. Transformers shall be located where accessible and be securely fastened in place. Page 1 of 2 . When not inside the sign, they need a 3 foot high x 3 foot wide x 3 foot deep workspace. Transformers are permitted to be located in attics or canopies provided there is a passageway at least 3 feet high x 2 feet wide with a minimum 12 inch catwalk/walkway from the point of entry. Transformers must be securely fastened and independent of T- bar when above a suspended ceiling. No part of sign mav be fed with flexible cord when located above T-bar ceilings. CEC 600.21(E&F) & 400.8 8. Adequate illumination shall be provided for all working spaces about electrical equipment. This applies to attics and canopies when entry is required to service or inspect the equipment. At least one switch is required at entrance. CEC 110.34 & 600.21 9. Doorway to an attic or canopy space shall be minimum 3 feet by 2 feet wide. CEC 600.21(E) E. Open neon outline or highlight lighting. 1. To be treated as a sign by this department. However, Section D-5 & D-6 of this bulletin will not apply. 2. Neon tubing shall be located where not normally exposed to physical damage. Open neon tubing below 9 feet shall be protected from physical damage by an approved shielding method. CEC 600.30 and 110.34(E) F. Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Signs 1. Will be treated as a sign by this department. All sign rules in sections A, B, C, D, F, and G will apply as appropriate. 2. LED illumination for signage must be a listed or recognized component. Many LED manufacturers specify particular brands and models of transformers some do not. Manufacturer information to clarify this issue is required on LED sign plans. 3. Unlisted LEDs may not be used in an electrical sign or as permanently installed illumination. 110.3 4. Please have packaging or catalog cut-sheets on hand for inspector to review when LED modules do not bear listing symbols. G. Inspections 1. Contact an Electrical Inspector one (1) workday (minimum) in advance of installation to arrange a site meeting on dav of installation. 2. Call for inspection Monday through Friday, 8:00- 8:30 a.m, at (714) 647-5821. Approved prints and the job card must be on site for inspection. These products are only suitable for connection to a Class 2 power source, rated max 15 Volt DC or less. 2. These products have not been evaluated for use when connected to a power source that does not comply with Class 2 voltage and energy limited circuit. 3. Class 2 LED Module Cat. Nos. M LEDMX-K series is each rated max. 7.5 Watts per unit. When units are connected to a Class 2 circuit, they are not to draw a total wattage of greater than the secondary or output rating of the Class 2 supply. 4. These products are suitable for use in dry, damp and wet locations with supply sources rated at 12 Volt DC or less. 5. These products are not required to be enclosed or protected from the weather in the end product. LED power supply with Class 2 outputs, Cat. No. SPS-)<0-12, where X is 4, 6 or 9, may be followed by the letter "C". 1. These power supplies have a maximum of one Class 2 output. However, Model SPS-90-12 has a maximum of two Class 2 outputs. The output of these power supplies has been evaluated to Class 2 output requirements for dc circuits. 2. These products with Class 2 outputs are suitable for use in dry and damp locations. 3. In the end product, power supply spacing to other heat producing components;'shall be minimum 4 inches spacing to sidewalls, and minimum 2 inches spacing to top of enclosure. 4. When used in a cord connected product, the.need for conducting a leakage current test stiall be considered in the end product. 5 The suitability of groundjng connection shall be determined in the end-use product. Polymeric Neon Electrodes, End Cap, Models EC-108-U, EC-183-U, EC-15S-U, EC-133-U,,and EC-203-U. 1 These devices are rated max. 7500 V ac to ground. May be used with 15K mid-point grounded transformer. 2. These products are suitable for use in dry or damp locations. 3. These products are required to be enclosed or protected from the weather. 4. As of the September 5,2008 effective date of UL879, Eighth Edition, all Integral Sleeved GTO cables indicated as suitable for usewith the neon electrode enclosures covered by this report shall have a temperature rating of min. 120(C minimum for dry locations and min. 135(C for damp locations. 5. These products are only for use in Listed signs and Sections of signs and are not suitable for field installed skeletal neon or outline lighting. 6. The units shall be subjected to a High Voltage Dielectric Strength test in the end product. 7. These components were evaluated for use with the Listed GTO cables made by Transco Inc (E226224) GTO-15 and Paige Electric Co L P (E 135239), GTO-15, and Hyrite Lighting Co., (E351585), GTO-15-Sand GTO-10-S. Usewithany other GTO type or manufacture will need to be evaluated ih the end product.
