Box 1988 (M-19) Santa Ana, CA 92702 (714) 647-5800 www.santa-ana.orq ELECTRICAL SIGN REQUIREMENTS - Code references are to the 2010 California Electrical Code (CEC) All signs require Planning Department approval. All electrical signs require electric plancheck and permit. 1. Manufacturer's instructions are required at the time of submittal C-11: 3-21-2011 2. Submit detailed installation instructions including diagrams to the Building Department for plan review at the time of submittal. Plans must include appropriate items noted by this bulletin. 3. Cash or surety bond in the amount of $200.00 is required at time of issuance for each address. The cash or surety bond will be refunded after all required finals. A building permit is also required - except for open or highlight neon lighting. Installation Requirements: , - CONTACT FIELD INSPECTOR PRIOR TO SIGN INSTALLATION. (SEE SECTION G OF THIS BULLETIN) 1. Conductors and equipment shall comply with California Electric Code Article 600. 2. All metal parts of a sign shall be bonded in the manner specified in Article 250. Isolated metal parts are permitted to be bonded by using an external green insulated conductor. Equipment grounding & bonding conductors must be sized by 110.26 and protected from physical damage. Minimum size is 14 AWG. CEC 600.7 3. A listed disconnect switch in the power supply primary, shall be installed within sight of sign or have permanently installed means for locking in an "OFF" position. This is also true for a transformer enclosure. CEC 600.6 4. A listed receptacle or an approved termination device shall be used for each neon electrode. To relieve stress at terminations, tubing shall be supported with listed tube supports in an approved manner within six inches of electrode connection. CEC 600.41 & 600.42 5. Every electric sign of any type shall be listed by an approved testing laboratory and shall be installed in conformance with this listing. That includes "1 of x", "2 of x" labeling for each separate unit of a multi-unit sign. CEC 600.3 6. All "can" letters and transformers housings shall have section labels that are readily visible after installation. CEC 600.4 7. Transformers shall be located where accessible and be securely fastened in place. Page 1 of 2 When not inside the sign, they need a 3 foot high x 3 foot wide x 3 foot deep workspace. Transformers are permitted to be located in attics or canopies provided there is a passageway at least 3 feet high x 2 feet wide with a minimum 12 inch catwalk/walkway from the point of entry. Transformers must be securely fastened and independent of T- bar when above a suspended ceiling. No part of sign mav be fed with flexible cord when located above T-bar ceilinqs. CEC 600.21(E&F) & 400.8 8. Adequate illumination shall be provided for all working spaces about electrical equipment. This applies to attics and canopies when entry is required to service or inspect the equipment. At least one switch is required at entrance. CEC 110.34 & 600.21 9. Doorway to an attic or canopy space shall be minimum 3 feet by 2 feet wide. CEC 600.21(E) E. Open neon outline or highlight lighting. 1. To be treated as a sign by this department. However, Section D-5 & D-6 of this bulletin will not apply. 2. Neon tubing shall be located where not normally exposed to physical damage. Open neon tubing below 9 feet shall be protected from physical damage by an approved shielding method. CEC 600.30 and 1 10.34(E) F. Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Signs 1. Will be treated as a sign by this department. All sign rules in sections A, B, C, D, F, and G will apply as appropriate. 2. LED illumination for signage must be a listed or recognized component. Many LED manufacturers specify particular brands and models of transformers some do not. Manufacturer information to clarify this issue is required on LED sign plans. 3. Unlisted LEDs may not be used in an electrical sign or as permanently installed illumination. 110.3 4. Please have packaging or catalog cut-sheets on hand for inspector to review when LED modules do not bear listing symbols. G. Inspections 1. Contact an Electrical Inspector one (1) workday (minimum) in advance of installation to arrange a site meeting on dav of installation. 2. Call for inspection Monday through Friday, 8:00- 8:30 a.m. at (714) 647-5821. Approved prints and the job card must be on site for inspection. Border Tube Kit, Canopy Kit and Light Guide Kit are for Wet Location only use when enclosing LED's connected to a Class 2 circuit operating at under 30V continuous DC, 12.4 V interrupted at a rate of 10-200Hz DC, or 15 VAC. 2. The LED border tube kit and Canopy Kit was not evaluated as an electrical enclosure. 3. The LED border tube kit and Canopy Kit was not evaluated as a watertight housing. LED power supplies, Cat. No. GEXLPS21, GEXNPS30-120, GEXNPS31-120 1. This component has been judged on the basis of the required spacings in the Standard for Class 2 Power Units, UL 1310, Fourth Edition, which would cover the component itself if submitted for Listing. 2.The supply terminals and connectors are suitable for factory wiring only of solid or tinned stranded No. 18 AWG conductors. 3.The equipment was submitted and tested for a maximum manufacturer's recommended ambient (Tmra) of 40 C. 4. LED array drivers, Models GEXLPS21-U, GEPS12-60U, GE060/MVA/12T12T1-A. 1. These components have been judged on the basis of the required spacing in the Standard for Class 2 Power Units, UL 1310, Fourth Edition, which would cover the component itself if submitted for Listing. 2. The terminals and connectors are suitable for factory wiring only of solid or tinned stranded No. 18 AWG conductors. 3. The equipment was submitted and tested for a maximum manufacturer's recommended ambient (Tmra) of 40°C. 4. The insulation system of the main isolation transformer designated (T2) in these models is a Class 105(A) insulation system. Unless the modules are mounted as specified in condition of acceptability number 7, a temperature test is required when these models installed within an electrical enclosure or raceway. 5. The maximum measured leakage current of a single unit is 0.49 mA. Leakage current measurements shall be performed when multiple LED drivers are used in the final equipment or when the LED driver is used in combination with other equipment in the end-use product. 6. The unit is intended for installation inside an electrical enclosure. 7. The unit may be used within an electrical enclosure or raceway without temperature test provided they are mounted not closer than 1 in. end to end or 4 in. side to side from adjacent LED power supplies. 8. The supply terminals and connectors are suitable for factory wiring only of solid or tinned stranded No. 18 AWG conductors. 3. The equipment was submitted and tested for a maximum manufacturer's recommended ambient (Tmra) of 40 C. 4. This unit is provided with a Class 105(A) insulation system. A temperature test is required when the unit is installed within an electrical enclosure or raceway. 5. Leakage current measurements shall be performed when more than four LED drivers are used in the equipment or when the LED driver is used in combination with other equipment in the end-use product. 6. LED array drivers, Models GEPS 12-20, GEPS 24-20. 1. The maximum measured output voltage, current and power at the output of these models was found in compliance with the limits for Class 2 output requirements. 2. In the end product, power supply spacing to other heat producing components shall be minimum 2 inches spacing to sidewalls, and minimum 2 inches spacing to top of enclosure. The equipment was submitted and tested for a maximum manufacturer's recommended ambient (Tmra) of 40 C. 3. The unit is intended for installation inside an electrical enclosure. 4. This unit is provided with a Class 105(A) insulation system. The unit may be used within an electrical enclosure or raceway without temperature test provided they are mounted not closer than 1 in. end to end or 4 in. side to side from adjacent LED power supplies. 5. The Xitanium Dimmer is only suitable for use in Class 2 circuits powered by Advance LED drivers with maximum input rating of 24Vdc, 4.1A, or 12VDC, 5A. Dimmer circuit is 0-10VDC. 6. This component has outputs that qualify as being Class 2. 2. These components are intended for use in dry location only. 3. The transformer employs a Class B (130) Insulation System. 4. These components shall be installed in compliance with the enclosure and mounting requirements of the ultimate application. 5. The maximum room ambient temperature permitted by the manufacture is 50(C. 6. A Temperature Test is required of the power supply installed in an enclosure that measures less than 13.5 by 6 by 4 inches. The maximum temperature on the output transformer by thermocouple is 110( C. Power supplies with Class 2 outputs, Models GEPS24-180U, GE180/MVA/24T1-C 1. The maximum measured output voltage, current and power at the output of these models was found in compliance with the limits for LPS output requirements and additionally evaluated to comply with Class 2 output criteria. 2. The transformer employ Class B insulation system. 3. Power Supply is intended for use in indoor Dry and Damp location only. 4. In the end product, power supply spacing to other heat producing components shall be minimum 2 inches spacing to sidewalls, and minimum 2 inches spacing to top of enclosure. The load powered by the Class 2 output of the LED drivers are suitable for use in dry, damp and wet locations. 4. In the end product, LED driver spacing to other heat producing components shall be minimum 2 inches spacing to sidewalls, and minimum 2 inches spacing to top of enclosure. 5. In the end product, LED Drivers shall be located not less than 1 inch (25.4mm) apart when arranged end-to-end, and not less than 4 inches (102mm) apart when arranged otherwise. 6. These products shall be enclosed in the end product. 7. The unit is intended for being used in permanently wired signs. 8. The suitability of output leads, rated No. 24 AWG minimum, rated 80°C minimum, 600 V, shall be determined in end product use. 9.
