ARCHITECTURAL STYLE: Craftsman Bungalow/ Neo-Classical Revival
DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND RELATED TO PERIOD ARCHITECTURE:
The architectural style terminology is adapted from the National Register Bulletin 16A.
The Neo-Classical Revival is one of the revival styles that flourished at the turn of the century, between 1890 and 1910. The style is
characterized by simple, rectangular volumes; symmetrical placement of doors and windows; hipped roofs with gabled elements and
boxed eaves. Wood embellishments are few and are confined to those that echoed the tendencies of the classics, especially at the
entry porches where columns usually evoked Greek and Roman architectural elements.
The Craftsman Bungalow architectural style is an early 20th century American movement, developed by Charles and Henry Greene of
Pasadena, California. The height of the movement is between 1900 and 1920’s. The Craftsman Bungalow is characterized by the use
of natural wood for exposed massive beams and rafters and exterior siding. Some of the most prominent features are: low pitched
gabled roof with wide overhangs and projecting brackets; the emphasis on horizontal shapes informally arranged; the use of shingles
as exterior finish; broad, gabled entry porches; no applied ornament; creek rock foundations and porches. Many houses include
Japanese and Swiss influences in their exterior detailing.

DESCRIPTION: (Describe resource and its major elements. Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, settings, and
boundaries.)
Featuring both Craftsman and Neo-Classical Revival architectural elements, this two-story single family dwelling is capped with a
hipped roof with front-projecting gables. Fine details such as the carved bargeboards, closely–spaced carved brackets, triangular knee
braces, and a cast plaster Neo-Classical entrance pediment accent this large house. A shed-style dormer, located in the center of the
roof is clad in wood shingles. Double-hung windows in pairs and trios are used throughout the second story, with a pair of vertical
windows fronted with a small decorative balcony in the center of the second floor, front façade. The full porch shelters a pair of
double-hung windows on the south side of the front door and a plate glass/sidelight/transom set on the north side. The door is flanked
with diamond paned sidelights, which match the transom above the window to the north. The living room wall, which faces the south
along the driveway, is curved with a large brick fireplace in the center. The north façade features a square gabled bay above a slanted
bay window. The wrought iron rails along the sides of the steps are not original.
HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS:
Originally owned by John and Clara Beatty. John Beatty was a prominent local newspaperman and storeowner. He owned the Santa
Ana Blade during its early years and was a partner in the Crookshank-Beatty Dry Goods Store, located in the Spurgeon Building. Mr.
Beatty was involved in much of early Santa Ana life. He was among the notables at president Harrison’s speech on April 23, 1892, at
the track-side in Santa Ana.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: (Discuss importance in terms of historical or architectural context as defined by theme,
period, geographic scope, and integrity.)
This example of residential architecture during the City of Santa Ana’s early formation years is located in French Park Historic
District. This two-story single family residence was built during the height of the development of French Park, a residential district
advertised as the “Nob Hill” of Orange County. French Park was home to many prominent businessman, doctors, bankers, attorneys
and civil servants from 1880 to the early 1940’s. The house is in excellent condition, in an unaltered state, and on its original site.
This building is an excellent example of a transitional style bungalow that embodies both Neo-Classical Revival and craftsman
features. The exposed beams with overhanging eaves and projecting wood brackets are the ready identification of a Craftsman
Bungalow, as well as the large front entry porch, capped by a small gable. The use of ornamentation on the porch gable and the
balustrade, as well as the central hipped roof, are good example of Neo-Classical Revival features.
SUMMARY/CONCLUSION:
The building has historic significance to the City of Santa Ana, because of its association with the Beatty family, a prominent and
influential family during the formative years of the City. This house also has a unique architectural significance. It is an excellent
example of a transitional style with Neo-Classical Revival and Craftsman Bungalow features.
