ARCHITECTURAL STYLE: Neo-Classical Revival
DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND RELATED TO PERIOD ARCHITECTURE:
The architectural style terminology is adapted from the National Register Bulletin 16A.
The Neo-Classical Revival is one of the revival styles that flourished at the turn of the century, between 1890 and 1910. The style is
characterized by simple, rectangular volumes; symmetrical placement of doors and windows; hipped roofs with gabled elements and
boxed eaves in residential architecture. Wood embellishments are few and are confined to those that echoed the tendencies of the
classics. In commercial structures, the exterior of the building is usually masonry with detailing created by a change of colors or
course style.

DESCRIPTION: (Describe resource and its major elements. Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, settings, and
boundaries.)
A two story brick structure built in a Neo-Classical Revival. The ground floor has been partially remodeled with ceramic tile and
metal piers. Above the ground floor, a horizontal band ties four double-hung windows, symmetrically placed on the second story.
Above the windows, a rectangular block most likely made of terracotta, provides the building’s name. A small false cornice (brick)
with paired brackets has been placed below the top of the parapet.
HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS:
The structure was first occupied by A. B. Paul & Son, shoemaker, who moved here from the 300 block of West Fourth Street. In
1921, the Clausen Furniture Co. located to this site and continued for many years. The name of the building appears to have been
added during that later period.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: (Discuss importance in terms of historical or architectural context as defined by theme,
period, geographic scope, and integrity.)
This example of commercial development architecture during the City of Santa Ana’s early development year is typical of the retail
buildings of the turn of the century. Downtown evolved from a small wood frame dry goods store in 1869 on the southwest corner of
Fourth and Broadway to the county seat by 1886 and the leading commercial and agricultural center in the region by 1920. This
building has been modified through the years, especially in the 40’s and 70’s, but the upper level remains virtually unchanged.
SUMMARY/CONCLUSION:
This building is characteristic of a significant period in the history of the City of Santa Ana. As a contributor to the downtown district,
this building was built during its early years of the formation. The upper portion of the building is well preserved and is a good
example of commercial structures of the time.
