Prehistoric Historic Both ARCHITECTURAL STYLE: Colonial Revival with French Revival influences DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND RELATED TO PERIOD ARCHITECTURE: The architectural style terminology is adapted from the National Register Bulletin 16A. The Colonial Revival style is one of the revival styles that were prevalent between 1895 –1915. The style is characterized for its simplicity and dignified formality. An entry porch flanked by columns on either side is one of its identifying features. Other features include simple, rectangular volumes with hipped roofs and boxed eaves, symmetrical placement of window and doors, simple colonial (Georgian and Federal style) details, especially on the columns and windows. Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, settings, and boundaries.) A gabled roof with rolled edges crowns this singled storied house. Wide shiplap siding covers the exterior. The impressive front porch, supported by two pairs of round wooden columns with Tuscan capitals, is offset and recessed. The impressive balustrade is made of heavy, short, turned balusters. Eight-over-one double-hung windows are used throughout the house. Eight lights occupy the top third of the side-facing front door. A large red brick chimney graces the south façade. The chimney along with rolled eaves introduce the French Revival style to this house. HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS: Edgar and Catherine Roth were the first owners of this house. A pharmacist, he owned a drugstore at 300 North Main Street in downtown Santa Ana. In 1928 Thomas and Berniece Hunter moved here to stay for 12 years. He was a representative for the Equitable Life Insurance Society. This house was believed to have belonged to E.M. and Margarette Berg. However, the County Recorders Office indicates a will executed by Mr. Berg, shows Margarette as the beneficiary of a property located on block 83, lots 27 & 28, which would place the house at 822 N. Lacy Street. This example of residential architecture during the City of Santa Ana’s early formation years is located in French Park Historic District. This single family residence was built during the height of the development of French Park, a residential district advertised as the “Nob Hill” of Orange County. French Park was home to many prominent businessman, doctors, bankers, attorneys and civil servants from 1880 to the early 1940’s. This house is in excellent condition, in an unaltered state, and on its original site. SUMMARY/CONCLUSION: This building has a distinctive architectural style. This is an unusual Colonial Revival house has a distinctive gable roof with rolled edges.
