A central hipped roof and multi-gabled dormers with bracketed closed eaves crowns the two-story structure of clapboard. Simple classical detailing on the pediment on the dormers and the symmetrical and balanced placement of windows are typical features of the Colonial Revival style. Corinthian columns and ornamental balustrade on the first and second stories provide the Neo-Classical character. HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS: Dr. Julius Crane originally built this house for his family, but sold it a short time later. From 1910-1977 the building was used as a mortuary by George Smith and partners, and was known as the Smith-Tuthill Funeral Parlor. In 1978 the house was renovated for a bank. This example of residential architecture during the City of Santa Ana’s early development years has become an excellent example of historic re-adaptive use of a structure. When the city incorporated in 1886 and the arrival of the railroad that same year, some of the residential uses in downtown were abandoned and commercial uses took over these buildings. Since 1910, the building has been used for commercial uses, first as a mortuary and later as a bank in 1977. SUMMARY/CONCLUSION: This building is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has a unique architectural significance because of its features, such as Neo-Classical portico added to an excellent example of Colonial Revival architecture. This building has an historical/cultural significance to the City because of its use, as a mortuary for 67 years, from 1910 to 1977.
