ARCHITECTURAL STYLE: Colonial Revival home with a Neo-Classical portico and balustrades added later (circa 1920’s).
DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND RELATED TO PERIOD ARCHITECTURE:
The architectural style terminology is adapted from the National Register Bulletin 16A.
The Colonial Revival style is one of the revival styles that were prevalent between 1895 –1915. The style is characterized for its
simplicity and dignified formality. An entry porch flanked by columns on either side is one of its identifying features. Other features
include simple, rectangular volumes with hipped roofs and boxed eaves, symmetrical placement of window and doors, simple colonial
(Georgian and Federal style) details, especially on the columns and windows.
The Neo-Classical Revival is one of the revival styles that flourished at the turn of the century, between 1890 and 1910. The style is
characterized by simple, rectangular volumes; symmetrical placement of doors and windows; hipped roofs with gabled elements and
boxed eaves. Wood embellishments are few and are confined to those that echoed the tendencies of the classics, especially at the
entry porches where columns usually evoked Greek and Roman architectural elements.

DESCRIPTION: (Describe resource and its major elements. Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, settings, and
boundaries.)
Originally a basic brick box, this two story modified Colonial Revival home evolved over the years to feature a prominent Neo-
Classical columned portico extending from the front portion of the house. A central hipped roof and multi-gabled dormers with
bracketed closed eaves crowns the two-story structure of clapboard. Simple classical detailing on the pediment on the dormers and
the symmetrical and balanced placement of windows are typical features of the Colonial Revival style. Corinthian columns and
ornamental balustrade on the first and second stories provide the Neo-Classical character.
HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS:
Dr. Julius Crane originally built this house for his family, but sold it a short time later. From 1910-1977 the building was used as a
mortuary by George Smith and partners, and was known as the Smith-Tuthill Funeral Parlor. In 1978 the house was renovated for a
bank.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: (Discuss importance in terms of historical or architectural context as defined by theme,
period, geographic scope, and integrity.)
This example of residential architecture during the City of Santa Ana’s early development years has become an excellent example of
historic re-adaptive use of a structure. When the city incorporated in 1886 and the arrival of the railroad that same year, some of the
residential uses in downtown were abandoned and commercial uses took over these buildings. Since 1910, the building has been used
for commercial uses, first as a mortuary and later as a bank in 1977.
SUMMARY/CONCLUSION:
This building is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has a unique architectural significance because of its
features, such as Neo-Classical portico added to an excellent example of Colonial Revival architecture. This building has an
historical/cultural significance to the City because of its use, as a mortuary for 67 years, from 1910 to 1977.
