DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND RELATED TO PERIOD ARCHITECTURE:
The Craftsman bungalow architectural style is an early 20th century American movement, developed by Charles and Henry Greene of
Pasadena, California. The height of the movement is between 1900 and 1920’s. The Craftsman bungalow is characterized by the use
of natural wood for exposed massive beams and rafters and exterior siding. Some of the most prominent features are: low pitched
gabled roof with wide overhangs and projecting brackets; the emphasis on horizontal shapes informally arranged; the use of shingles
as exterior finish; broad, gabled entry porches; no applied ornament; creek rock foundations and porches. Many houses include
Japanese and Swiss influences in their exterior detailing.

DESCRIPTION: (Describe resource and its major elements. Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, settings, and
boundaries.)
Craftsman bungalow architectural features found in this structure include clad narrow clapboard siding. The house is topped with a
side-facing gabled roof with a prominent front-facing gabled porch. Single exposed beams and vertical lath venting accent the
roofline and trios of square posts, resting on brick pilasters clad in grey and brown glazed bricks, support the corners of the porch.
Eight-light casement windows flank the fifteen-light front door while a single-car garage is located on the east of the house, at the end
of the narrow driveway.
HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS:
Edward and Florence Moore built this house on the western third of their property, on the corner of Ninth and French Streets. The
Moores, who came to California in 1904, owned eighty acres of prime peat land and grew celery, barley, and corn. After they
completed the construction of a larger home on the same parcel, records show that the Moores rented the small bungalow to Blanche
Engler, a clerk at Holladay and Phillips, for many years.
