ARCHITECTURAL STYLE: Colonial Revival
DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND RELATED TO PERIOD ARCHITECTURE:
The architectural style terminology is adapted from the National Register Bulletin 16A.
The Colonial Revival style is one of the revival styles that spans from 1880 to 1955 and reached its apex between 1895–1915. The
style is characterized for its simplicity and dignified formality. The volumes are generally simple and rectangular. Identifying
features of the style include an accentuated front door, normally with decorative crown (pediment) supported by pilasters or extended
forward and supported by slender columns to form an entry porch; doors commonly have overhead fanlights or sidelights and many
have broken pediments. Other identifying features include the symmetrical placement of windows and centered doors; windows with
double hung sashes, usually with multi-pane glazing and windows frequently in adjacent pairs. Hip roofs appear more frequently on
the earlier examples of the period, while the later houses have side gabled roofs.

DESCRIPTION: (Describe resource and its major elements. Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, settings, and
boundaries.)
Wide shiplap siding, edged with corner boards covers the exterior of this tall, rectangular, two-story house. A side-facing gabled roof,
punctuated with matching pediment dormers, tops the house. The front and side windows are framed with peaked lintels while the
paired, double hung front windows on the first floor have straight lintels. The symmetrical front façade is centered with a front-facing
gabled roofed portico with segmental arched pediment supported by new round wood columns installed in 1983. The paneled front
door is circa 1920 Craftsman style, with windows at the top, a shelf and vertical panels below. A photograph attached to the Santa
Ana Historic Register Application, shows that the front elevation windows had diagonal lites. The elongated windows are of a
transitional style. Currently all front elevation windows have been replaced with single hung white vinyl sash windows without lights.
The porch and the front door appear to date back to about 1910. New round columns were installed at the portico because the 1910
era columns had been replaced with wrought iron in the 1960’s. The rear third of the building was added in the mid-1980’s. The
defining features that make this a Colonial Revival style include the centered front entry porch which accentuates the entry door, the
symmetrical placement of the windows, and the simple rectangular volume.
HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS:
The first known residents in this address were William and Nina Bullard, listed in the local directories in 1901. He was the manager
of the shoe department at the Reinhaus Brothers Department Store on Fourth Street. In 1907, Charles and his wife Louis Kelley
moved to this house. Charles came to Santa Ana as a boy with his parents. He went to grade and high school in Santa Ana, then to
University of Washington. In 1899 he married Louis Kingcade of Long Beach. Charles was one of Santa Ana’s best known early
merchants. He was listed as secretary at Rowley Drug Company the year he moved into this house. He later became manager and by

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: (Discuss importance in terms of historical or architectural context as defined by theme,
period, geographic scope, and integrity.)
This example of residential architecture during the City of Santa Ana’s early formation years is located in French Park Historic
District. This two story single family residence was relocated here during the early development years of French Park, a residential
district nicknamed as the “Nob Hill” of Orange County. French Park, one of the first residential developments in the City, was home
to many prominent businessmen, doctors, bankers, attorneys and civil servants from 1880 to the early 1940’s. While this house has
been substantially rehabilitated and some of the historic details lost, it has retained its scale, shape, and fenestration and portico trim
details. The Bullard House is listed as a contributing structure to the overall character of the French Park Historic District.
SUMMARY/CONCLUSION:
This building contributes to the overall character and history of the neighborhood. Although substantially rehabilitated, it has retained
its scale, shape, and portico trim details which give it is defining features as a Colonial Revival style house. The fenestration detailing
and shape are transitional elements.
