*P3a. Description: (Describe resource and its major elements. Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, setting, and boundaries.)
This one and a half story residence, nearly hidden behind a fence and dense vegetation, exhibits the influence of the Shingle Style.
The side-gabled roof is accented by an oversized, turret-like dormer over the west half of the façade and a front-gable over the
east half. Narrow clapboard sheathes the lower story while square butt shingles cover the upper level. A recessed porch spans
the façade, divided into two bays by paneled posts with Composite capitals. The posts sit on a solid porch railing. Located in the
east bay, the entry consists of a wood door pierced by a large, beveled glass light, and an original wood-framed screen door. A
large, square window to the east features “X” patterned muntins. To the west, a larger window repeats the diamond-paned motif in
a transom. Plain surrounds with molded lintels characterize the openings. Side elevations feature squared and angled bays with
double-hung sash windows. Other than the non-original fence, the house appears unaltered, although this cannot be confirmed
due to limited visibility.

(Discuss importance in terms of historical or architectural context as defined by theme, period, and geographic scope. Also address integrity)
The Foster House is architecturally significant as an example of the influence of the Shingle Style during the transitional
phase preceeding the Craftsman period that began shortly after the turn of the twentieth century. Constructed circa 1903, the
house was the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Foster, a retired couple, as of 1905, when the property first appears in the city
directories. The property is located about one block east of downtown Santa Ana, and was one of a cluster of approximately
a dozen homes that had been erected on this stretch of Fourth Street by 1906. Today, it is a relatively isolated remnant of
the early years of the twentieth century in the area.

The Foster House qualifies for listing in the Santa Ana Register of Historical Property under Criterion 1 as an intact and
representative example of the influence of the Shingle Style that occurred around the turn of the twentieth century. Features
associated with the Shingle Style include the turret-like dormer that suggests a tower, the use of shingling on the upper

house has been categorized as “Key” for its distinctive architectural style and quality. Character defining exterior features of
the Foster House that should be preserved include, but may not be limited to: sheathing (clapboard and shingling); roof
configuration; massing; windows and surrounds including diamond paning; doors; porch; and architectural details such as
