This typical, one-story bungalow combines Colonial Revival and Craftsman features in its design. Roof treatment includes
exposed rafter tails, a central, segmental arch front gable, and an offset gablet at the ridgeline. Narrow clapboard covers the
building. The façade is three bays wide, with a porch recessed into the southern two bays. Tuscan columns support the
porch roof over the central bay and a pergola over the south bay. A central entry consists of a solid, one-panel door flanked
by sidelights. A tripartite window, its central sash spanned by two rows of small square lights, is located south of the entry
while a large, fixed sash window occupies the façade north of the entry. A chimney is attached to the north elevation. Minor
modifications include the addition of corrugated plastic over the pergola and security bars to the windows.

The Liggitt-Hayes House is significant as a characteristic example of a bungalow type that flourished in the years between
1919 and 1925. According to building permit records, it was constructed in 1921 for H. N. Hayes. Harry Hayes was Assistant
Secretary of the Reliance Title Company in the 1920s, and office manager of the Santa Ana Water Department in the 1930s.
Anna Hayes, nee Witts, came from a pioneer Santa Ana family (Treasures). Previous research has also associated this
house with Delbert and Ruby Liggitt, proprietors of the D. E. Liggitt Lumber Company in Santa Ana.

*B10. Significance (continued):
Santa Ana was founded by William Spurgeon in 1869 as a speculative town site on part of the Spanish land grant known as
Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana. Early growth and development were stimulated by the arrival of the Southern Pacific
Railroad in 1878 and the Santa Fe Railroad in 1886. Following its incorporation as a city in 1886, Santa Ana was
recognized as one of the leading communities in the area in 1889 when it became the seat of the newly created County of
Orange. The development of southern California is general and Santa Ana in particular experienced a large boost in the
second half of the 1880s, when competition between the two railroads triggered a real estate boom.
Initially, residential development of Santa Ana was concentrated in the vicinity of the civic and commercial centers, located
around the intersection of Fourth and Main Streets. By the second decade of the twentieth century, however, the city had
expanded outwards. Neighborhoods such as French Court, north of the earlier French Park district, were improved with
bungalows, the most popular residential type of the era. In the years between 1919 and 1925, a significant number of
bungalows combined Colonial Revival features such as Tuscan columns and symmetry with Craftsman elements such as
exposed structural parts, porches, and pergolas.
The Liggitt-Hayes House is significant as a good and intact example of this building type. Included in the Santa Ana
Register of Historical Property, the Liggitt-Hayes House has been categorized as “Contributive.” Characteristic features
include the side-gabled roof, three bay configuration, nearly symmetrical composition, and inclusion of both Craftsman and
Colonial Revival elements. Character-defining exterior features of the Liggitt-Hayes House that should be preserved
include, but may not be limited to: materials and finishes (siding); roof configuration and detailing; three bay composition;
porch and pergola; original doors and windows; and architectural detailing such as columns and rafter tails.
