MEMORANDUM
To: Historic Resource Commission
Pedro Gomez, Assistant Planner I
From: Vemy Carvajal, Principal Planner
Subject:
HISTORIC DESIGNATION MARKERS
Date: March 22, 2018
In 2003, the City Council approved a contract to initiate the Historic Designation Marker
Program. This program was designed to identify and highlight the first properties in the City
that were listed on the Santa Ana Register of Historic Properties ("Register"). In addition, the
program was intended to promote and educate the general public regarding the City's historic
preservation efforts and to give property owners a sense of pride and accomplishment in
maintaining their structures.
Initially, staff worked with a professional sign contractor to fabricate and install historic
markers on various historic properties throughout the city, at no cost to the owner. As part of
this program, two basic marker designs were created, including an 8 -inch by 10 -inch and a 4 -
inch by 5 -inch format. The larger marker was envisioned for commercial buildings while the
second design was intended for residential properties.
While the City is no longer funding a marker program, property owners are encouraged to
consider investing in historic markers for their listed structures. To assist, staff has created the
attached Historic Designation Marker Guidelines handout that follows the original design and
guidelines of the marker program. This handout is intended to assist owners wishing to install a
historic marker on their property, and will be made available on the City's website and as part
of future educational outreach material to all historic property owners.
Attachment
SAHRCklerical - counter forms\bistoricmarkendoc
