Orozco, Norma
From: Feuerborn, Joyce <
Sent: Tuesday, June 05, 2018 10:31 AM
To: eComment
Cc: Lisa Tran; Linn; Treen, Lisa; Church, Jesse
Subject: Joint Use Agreement
Categories: Correspondence
To the Santa Ana City Council,
I am a parent, teacher and voter in Santa Ana. As a teacher and parent at Godinez Fundamental High
School, I feel like our students and my kid gets a first class education but are treated as 2nd class
citizens when it comes to facilities at Godinez. Here is what many parents and
teachers/advisors/coaches would like to see happen on our campus for ALL of our student athletes:
1. Payments: As it stands, our principal Mr. Church is required to cut a check for on average
$20,000 each summer for use of our own gym and fields. Really??!! In order to not accrue as
many fines, coaches end up cutting practices short or we pay the city to use our own facilities.
Not good for our students or our budget.
2. Safety: We have had multiple incidences of people walking onto our track and fields during the
school day. Most people are good but at times random people have walked onto our campus
and there have been altercations where police and/or security is called and this puts our
students in danger. We need to be able to make our school a LOT MORE SECURE. Having the
ability to build fences around Godinez would make our children safer.
3. Parking garage: The garage should be part of the GFHS's campus and NOT part of the city.
This will allow us to fundraise during city and state tournaments thus giving us $$$ to buy new
equipment and clean up and maintain existing fields. Which brings me to #4...
4. Upkeep: Godinez is required to clean and maintain all fields and facilities even if other schools,
organized teams or people use and misuse them. Example: our front office gets calls
weekly because the field is a mess and there is a city tournament, so the fields need to be
cleaned and ready. Our custodians are then pulled from their regular duties and must clean
the fields of cigarette butts, liquor bottles and trash. Since there are little to no fences, people
misuse the baseball and soccer fields all the time but GFHS spends their own money to keep
our fields maintained.
5. Track: Godinez has the only dirt track out of high schools in ALL OF ORANGE COUNTY. Many
times PE classes are stopped because the track is muddy or a random person just wanders
onto the track which causes a safety issue. Our track is an embarrassment to SAUSD and
many times, I've had parents from other schools note how sad our track and fields look.
There are multiple other reasons and as a water polo mom, I haven't even addressed our lack of a
pool at the largest high school in SAUSD. But, for now, the issue before you is to fix the joint use
agreement. This will keep our students safer, fitter and yes, happier.
t
N
