Legal Notice published in the Orange County Reporter on May 25, 2018 and <br />June 1, 2018. <br />Continued from the June 5, 2018 City Council Meeting by a 6-0 vote (Martinez <br />absent). <br />The following spoke on the matter; <br />• Claudio W. Gallegos on behalf of Congressman Lou Correa, encouraged <br />City Council to continue funding of the legal defense fund for deportation <br />defense. Expressed support for establishment of this fund. <br />• Lindsay Toczylowski, Executive Director of Immigrant Defenders Law <br />Center, noted funds allowed the opening of an office in Santa Ana, program <br />servicing 10 families, and all families served are residents of Santa Ana. <br />Urged City Council to continue funding program. <br />• Tania Sawczuk, opined Santa Ana is part of a growing network of <br />jurisdictions around the country dedicated to ensuring all members of the <br />community have access to due process and a fair day in court. Noted Vera <br />Institute for Justice will continue to provide ongoing data driven evaluations <br />of the program to ensure accountability for the public dollars spent. <br />• Cynthia Felix, staff attorney for Immigrant Defenders Law Center, read a <br />letter from her client to the City Council. Noted addition of two new referrals <br />from Santa Ana residents. <br />• Carlos Perea, expressed support for universal representation and immigrant <br />legal defense fund. Opined program is an important service fund for the <br />community. <br />• Alexis Teodoro, urged City Council to approve option "A" including no cuts in <br />funding. Opined city should invest in transformative restorative justice like <br />practices. <br />• Gwen Barrios, opined City should approve budget option "A" which includes <br />youth and immigrant family services. <br />• Citlali Ruiz, address City Council to request support for budget option "A" and <br />invest in youth and universal representation. <br />• Roger Valeneva Ricardez, expressed support for budget option "A" and to <br />invest in youth and immigrant families by using cannabis revenue. <br />• Emily Peraza, urged City Council to approve budget option "A" <br />Hearing closed. Council discussion ensued. <br />Councilmember Solorio, asked how many of the families being serviced are <br />Santa Ana residents, DACA applicants, and veterans. Noted budget <br />incorporates City Council input, restores youth programs, and projected adult <br />use commercial cannabis revenue. Directed staff to use all future legal defense <br />dollars towards Santa Ana residents with priority to DACA members or veterans. <br />City Manager Godinez, noted anticipated commercial cannabis revenue is being <br />placed in reserve account and staff would provide City Council with spending <br />plan for review and approval. <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 16 JUNE 19, 2018 <br />10A-16 <br />
