2. UPDATE ON CITY'S POOLS <br />o Ron Ono presented an update on the 5 city swimming pools we have <br />throughout the city. Indicated all 5 pools and Civic Center fountains are <br />maintained by one General Maintenance Worker to ensure pools and <br />fountains operate properly. Ron Ono highlighted recent improvements <br />made on the swimming pools as well as improvements approved for this <br />year. Ron also presented the needed Deferred Maintenance needs <br />required on all the 5 pools in the future. <br />o Erendira Moreno presented an update on the Aquatics Programs and the <br />proposed increase in the swim schedule from funding approved by City <br />Council. <br />o Councilmember Villegas indicated the importance to keep the pools open <br />as much as possible. Next year we should keep all pools open during the <br />summer. <br />o Councilmember Benavides appreciated staff working together to keep all <br />pools open during the summer. <br />o Councilmember Villegas requested staff to e-mail the cost of pool <br />maintenance. <br />o City Manager Godinez indicated preventative improvements such as <br />painting the equipment is needed to extend the life of the pool use. <br />o Interim Director Ralph Nunez indicated we need to hire lifeguards to keep <br />pools open at least 3 hours per day. <br />3. COORDINATION OF THE CITY WIDE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM <br />o Executive Director of the Human Resources Agency Steven Pham indicated <br />the agency is looking into stream lining the volunteer program to provide <br />continuity among the various city departments that uses volunteers. Human <br />Resources is concerned we are not screening the volunteers. Once a draft is <br />prepared it will be presented to the City Manager and the Executive <br />Management Team for review and approval as a city policy. The program will <br />require all volunteers to be fingerprinted and life scanned to obtain <br />background on the individual. He anticipates the policy will be approved and <br />running by September 1It <br />o Councilmember Benavides asked what departments have volunteers and <br />would like a general overview of volunteers from each department. <br />o Exec. Director Pham indicated the SAPD volunteers go through a thorough <br />life scan. Other departments have volunteers that need to go through a <br />similar process. Also the program will identify how to handle one day <br />volunteers. <br />o Councilmember Benavides asked what type of volunteers are used and their <br />roles. <br />o Jeannie Jurado indicated the various types of volunteers that work with Parks <br />and Recreation from the Boys/Girls Basketball, Catalina Trip, Library <br />Youth, Rec. & Comm.
