The
interactive components are: Caring mentors; STEM workshops; "College is For Me Too!" camp; free books' special
outings; and nutrition seminars plus wraparound services for the families.
America On Track's Brighter Futures for Children of Prisoners Program specifically addresses the needs of the most
vulnerable, often overlooked population - children of prisoners. Not only do they face the stigma of having a
parent who is incarcerated, but they often live in impoverished conditions where they are more likely to be
exposed to gangs, drugs and other illegal activities. Brighter Futures is a holistic and comprehensive program that
provides children and families with education and resources to build their confidence, stay motivated for the
future, and break the cycle of poverty and incarceration.
For over 15 years, Brighter Futures has served vulnerable OC children and their families, inspiring and empolwering
them to work hard, set and achieve their goals, and break the cycle of poverty and incarceration. Program
activities and components are offered throughout the year on the following schedule:
- One-on-one Mentor Sessions: 3-4 meetings (for a total of 8 hours) per month, for a minimum of 1 year
-STEM Workshops: Quarterly
- College Is For Me Too! Summer Camp: Annually in July
- Caregiver Seminars: Quarterly
- Holiday Party: Annually in December
-Special ACT Outings: 3-6 per year
The overall goal of Brighter Futures for Children of Prisoners is to provide a safety net for children of pisoners and
their mothers/caregivers. Over the long term, we strive to see these children blossom into productive adults rather
than follow in their parent's footsteps. The program's short-term goals are to help our youth improve their
academic skills, become more confident, abstain from drugs, set goals for the future, and limit the likelihood of
future involvement in the criminal justice system.
CDBG funding will be used for program staff salaries and indirect expenses.
EXHIBIT A
