Hope Builders serves 18-28 year old youth from Orange County who are:
100% nemployed/underemployed and lowincome, 70% basic skills deficient, 72%
impacted by violence and 44% pregnant or parenting. Prior to enrollment, Hope
Builders carefully vets each candidate to determine their readiness for engaging in
the program. Youth who wish to enroll must demonstrate they are ready for change
by: submitting an application, participating in an interview, passing a drug test,
possessing right-to-work documents and taking a basic skills assessment test.
Trainees are expected to show up on time every day, dressed professionally, drug
free and with a good attitude. While operating on the premise that youth do not learn
how to work by solely sitting in a classroom, trainees are paid ($75/week) in a
training program that simulates the workplace and consists of four components
delivered over a 28-month period: • 16 weeks of hard -skills training (Monday to
Friday, 8:30-4:00): The business applications program trains and prepares youth for
employment as administrative assistants, receptionists and data entry specialists in
business settings. Hope Builders co -enrolls trainees in SAC's Office Management
Certificate program. SAC instructors teach classes Monday through Thursday at
SAC, and Hope Builders staff conduct training sessions on site on Fridays. Classes
include Business Math, Introduction to Microsoft Office, Business Writing Skills,
Office Procedures and Keyboard Skills. Upon completion, trainees earn 17 units
towards completion of an AA degree program. • 28 months of Case Management
and Life Skills: Upon program enrollment, each trainee is matched with a Support
Specialist who, over a 28-month period, works with youth to address barriers that
may prevent them from successfully completing the program and/or retaining
employment. During skills training, Support Specialists conduct life skills workshops
and meet weekly with trainees one-on-one and in small groups, to address social -
emotional issues and monitor their progress. Upon training completion, Support
Specialists conduct a follow-up assessment to develop a plan for a smooth transition
to the labor market and/or post -secondary education program, and maintain monthly
contact for up 24 months after training completion or until the client has maintained
employment for at least 6 months. • 28 months of Career & Education Pathways:
