Its location, a converted shipping container at the existing community farm at Heritage Museum of
OC, serves to form a unique and well-rounded space to literally build community. The individual parts will
function as follows:
Tool library: A collection of tools and hardware will be maintained for week-long rentals to members of
The Borrowing Barn (open to anyone who has signed up and paid the nominal annual fee). Assistance and
training on how to use the tools will be available. The tool library will be open during the museum's existing
weekend public hours and by appointment. An online inventory will be available for perusal.
Time bank: To start, the time bank will be tied to the tool library, expanding beyond as it becomes more
established. Eligible volunteer hours will be added to individual balances that can be used towards fees and
materials from the Barn, etc. The time bank will allow members to receive and/or provide services outside
the standard economic model, tracked by this central time bank. Hours will also be able to be donated,
should a member wish to help another member out.
Seed library: The aforementioned community farm (Gospel Swamp Farm) acts as a living seed bank and
cultivation center. The Borrowing Barn will expand this work by having a more traditional seed library
component. Members will be able to deposit or withdraw seeds to cultivate at home, seek advice on growing
techniques, and learn how to harvest their own seeds to return. Emphasis will be put on preserving the
cultural tradition of the seeds deposited into the bank for educational purposes.
DIY education center: Regular DIY/crafting/making workshops will be held on -site, featuring fellow nonprofit
organizations, local makers and artisans, and community members with skills to share. The workshops
will be available for free or minimal cost (to be paid with money or, in the future, time bank credits) for
members and a slight surcharge for the general public to generate continued income for tools, repairs, and
materials.
EXHIBIT A
