We do not have any vertebrate <br />fossil localities that lie within the proposed project site boundaries, but we do have localities <br />nearby from the same sedimentary units that occur in the proposed project area. <br />Surface sediments throughout the entire proposed project area and in the surrounding <br />vicinity consist of younger terrestrial Quaternary Alluvium, derived primarily as alluvial fan <br />deposits from the hills of the Santa Ana Mountains to the east, broadly via the Santa Ana River <br />that currently flows to the west. These younger Quaternary deposits typically do not contain <br />significant vertebrate fossils, at least in the uppermost layers, but are underlain by older <br />Quaternary deposits at varying depths that do contain significant vertebrate fossils. Our closest <br />vertebrate fossil locality from older Quaternary deposits is probably LACM 1339, south- <br />southwest of the proposed project area sites in Costa Mesa east of the Santa Ana River near the <br />top of the mesa bluffs along Adams Avenue, that produced fossil specimens of mammoth, <br />Mammuthus, and camel, Camelidae, bones from sands approximately 15 feet below the top of the <br />mesa that is overlain by shell bearing silts and sands. A little farther almost due south of the <br />proposed project area site 2, in Costa Mesa along the Newport Freeway near Santa Isabel <br />Avenue, our older Quaternary locality LACM 4219 produced fossil specimens of turtle, <br />Inspiring wonder, discovery and res7.6C. 44 r.2u1nfiral and cultural worlds. <br />
