Approve the display of "E Pluribus Unum," Latin for "Out of Many, One," in City Council <br />Chambers. <br />2. Direct staff to install one of the following installation options: <br />Option #1 or #2 — $19,000 estimated budget <br />Option #1: Install the Motto and Seal in a stacked configuration, above the existing <br />alcove. <br />Option #2: Install the Motto and Seal side -by -side, above the existing alcove. <br />Option #3 or #4 — $25,000 estimated budget <br />Option #3: Install the Motto and Seal in a stacked configuration, above the existing <br />alcove, with a curtain system. <br />Option #4: Install the Motto and Seal side -by -side, above the existing alcove, with a <br />curtain system. <br />DISCUSSION <br />During the September 3, 2019, City Council meeting, City Council discussed whether to pursue the <br />placement of the Congressionally approved United States motto, "In God We Trust," in City Council <br />Chambers. The City Council also expressed an interest in displaying one of the United States' <br />traditional mottos, "E Pluribus Unum," Latin for "Out of Many, One," along with the current national <br />motto. The City Council requested that staff provide potential display options for the area behind <br />the dais. <br />During a work-study session on October 1, 2019, the City Council was presented with five options <br />for the display of both mottos, along with the estimated costs associated with each option.
